Intro to Apache Kafka

Title: Introduction to Apache Kafka

Speaker: David Arthur, LucidWorks

Apache Kafka is a new breed of messaging system built for the "big data" world. Coming out of LinkedIn (and donated to Apache), it is a distributed pub/sub system built in Scala. It has been an Apache TLP now for several months with the first Apache release imminent. Built for speed, scalability, and robustness, Kafka should definitely be one of the data tools you consider when designing distributed data-oriented applications.

The talk will cover a general overview of the project and technology, with some use cases, and a demo.

About the Speaker:

David Arthur is a Software Engineer at LucidWorks, a TriHUG regular, one of those "open source people."

Hey TriHUG folks, there was no Durham Bulls game on the schedule tonight...but as luck would have it, there is a USA Baseball versus Cuba game instead. So if you're coming to the Kafka talk, you will probably encounter parking attendants asking you for $5 to park in the deck. If you tell them you are here for a TriHUG meeting at Bronto, they will hopefully let you through....maybe after a little grumbling. It helps to be persistent and tell them that you are here for a company event at Bronto and that you are not going to the game. Sorry for the late notice, but we still look forward to seeing you at 6:30 for pizza and drinks!

Hey everyone, this is David (the speaker). If there is any particular thing about Kafka or some use cases you'd like to see, drop a line here and I'll try to incorporate it into the talk.

I'll talk a bit about ops, though I don't have much experience with it myself (being a developer). The main project page has been updated for the 0.8 release and includes some good info on operations.
