For this Tuesday, let's see THE PAST. You may have heard this film referred to by it's original French title "Le passé". This film is in French with English subtitles.
IMDB writes: "An Iranian man deserts his French wife and two children to return to his homeland. Meanwhile, his wife starts up a new relationship, a reality her husband confronts upon his wife's request for a divorce."
The movie is running 95% on rottentomatoes.com with audience reaction at 85% (as of Feb.23), who write: "Beautifully written, sensitively directed, and powerfully acted, The Past serves as another compelling testament to Asghar Farhadi's gift for finely layered drama."
This is Asghar Farhadi's latest directorial & writing effort. As some of you may know, I previously hosted his Persian film "A Separation" back in 2011. "A Separation" went on to win numerous awards, including an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Although Asghar Farhadi personally won a number of awards internationally, he was nominated for Best Writing of an Original Screenplay at the Oscars but did not win.
The movie stars Bérénice Bejo. While she mostly does foreign French films, some may remember her from a minor supporting role in "A Knight's Tale" back in 2001. Others may have seen her French language films, as much of her work seems to make its way over to our shores. Unfortunately, I have not followed the careers of, nor are very familiar with, the rest of the lead cast: Tahar Rahim, Ali Mosaffa, Pauline Burlet, Elyes Aguis, Jeanne Jestin.
Both Asghar Farhadi & Bérénice Bejo won awards at Cannes for THE PAST. They and the movie have also won or been nominated for many other awards.
As always, please consider buying your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. I've already purchased mine.
It may not be practical or even possible for us to save seats. If you have a preferred choice for seats, please arrive early as seating is not reserved. You are not required to sit with others from the group as part of attending meetups that I host, but I do ask that you check in with me before the movie starts and/or meet with us after for the short discussion of the movie.
SHOWTIME: 6:40 pm on Tuesday Feb 25 at Famous Players Canada Square Cinema. (movie length = 2h10m)
MEETUP TIME: 6:15 pm - 6:30 pm
MEETUP LOCATION: At the Famous Players Canada Square cinema, in the seating area in front of the concessions. I will have a sign that says, "Tuesday Night at the Movies".
POSSIBLE CONFUSION WITH LOCATION OF THEATRE: Please note, there are two theatres very close to Yonge and Eglinton, one in the complex on the North West corner and one in the complex on the South West corner. Canada Square is the SOUTH WEST one. It is not well signed. You need to walk South on Yonge and enter the door that leads to Mandarin to find the theatre. It's just a large building, i.e., the walk is not far. Alternatively, if you are driving, go South on Yonge from Eglinton and turn right on to Berwick, then again turn right into the multi-level garage. There will be a door for the theatre adjacent to the parking lot located on the top level of that parking structure. Parking was 6$ for the night last time I was there.
TICKETS: This movie costs just $6.50 (or $5.85 with a Scene card).

AFTER THE MOVIE: Let's all discuss the movie for a few minutes as a group in the hallway directly in front of the theatre room that the movie will play in.
AFTER THE DISCUSSION aka "DRINKS AND SOCIALISING": Options for drinks and socialising will be discussed among those who are present and are interested. I am open to reasonable suggestions, but choice of venue will likely be made democratically by "majority vote". Participation in Drinks and Socialising is not required to attend or RSVP Yes to this meetup. If noone's really interested, we simply won't do it.
RSVPs/LAST MINUTE DECISIONS: For any of my movie meetups, if you are on the waiting list or make a last minute decision, please feel free to check in with me and join. RSVP time and quantity limits are used by me for situations where a hard limit is required, not for the actual "watching of the movie" or discussion. However, if we are saving seats or you wish to join us for drinks and socialising, I cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate drop-ins.
I hope to see you there!
