Hike Gradings

Please Note

For your personal safety and well being, Tuki Tiger Adventures walk leaders reserve the right to decline anyone from participating on activities where they consider the individual to be ill equipped or unprepared. It is YOUR responsibility to follow the following guidelines and plan accordingly to avoid disappointment.

1 PAW (Leisurely)
A walk tailored for all fitness levels and abilities regardless of previous experience. More akin to a City stroll. Walks will typically be in the range of 3-7 miles on very stable terrain – usually paving, concrete or grass, with only gradual undulations. Good for evening fitness and pub socialising.

Welcome to all! Comfortable clothing, sufficient!

2 PAWS (Beginners/Easy)
Great days out for everyone as previous hiking experience is not necessary but you will need to be in general good health and reasonable fitness being able to walk the distance specified on the event. Can expect a walk up to around 10 miles where the terrain is relatively easy-going on mostly well maintained paths (can still be muddy) and at a likely relaxed pace. There may be some hills but they’ll likely be short and of a gentle nature with total ascent usually kept to a minimum.

Average fitness required. Basic technical footwear, clothing and equipment recommended. Waterproofs essential in bad conditions. No trainers! Advise against jeans.

3 PAWS (Moderate/Intermediate)
A trail up to around 16-17 miles but can also include shorter walks and evening excursions, where the terrain has the potential to be rocky, broken or occasionally off-piste but generally paths will be in good condition. The route will often be hillier with a possibility of short steep climbs or descents, and a faster, generally brisk pace should be anticipated. Can sometimes expect ascent to top out around 750m (2,450ft) with the rare occasional possibility of moderate altitude if a smaller mountain range is to be summited, but will usually be less.

Average to good level of fitness required. Must be capable of climbing and descending hills. Basic technical footwear, clothing and equipment a necessity! Waterproofs essential in bad conditions and for mountain walking. Recommend ankle support hiking boots but not essential! No trainers! No jeans!

4 PAWS (Strenuous/Hard)
These hikes are great if you are fit and want to challenge yourself a bit more. Previous hiking experience is strongly recommended, but not essential if you are confident in your own physical condition and are above average fitness. Some difficult terrain i.e. loose and rocky paths may be experienced which you could encounter for longer periods. The trail is likely to be tackled at a fast pace – usually in the region of 3 miles per hour, with a greater chance for multiple, sometimes steep and demanding hills. Total ascent will likely range from approximately 600m (1,950ft) to 1100m (3,600ft) and it is possible high altitudes are reached if the day’s activity is to summit a mountain range. Such trails will sometimes be listed as ‘Hilly Fitness Walks’.

Good to strong level of fitness required, preferably for experienced walkers only! Must be capable of climbing and descending steep hills. Basic technical footwear, clothing and equipment a necessity! Waterproofs essential in bad conditions and for mountain walking. Recommend ankle support hiking boots but not essential! No trainers! No jeans!

5 PAWS (Very Strenuous/Demanding)
These challenging walks are designed to be as hard as possible. You could encounter difficult terrain for extended periods, trails may exceed 20 miles in length and it’s distinctly likely there WILL be lots of hills, some demandingly steep. Alternatively a high mountain range may be summited at higher altitude. Walks will be lead at a very fast and strenuous pace. Previous hiking experience is strongly recommended, but not essential if you are confident in your own physical condition and well above average fitness. Total ascent will usually range from 1000m (3,300ft) to sometimes in excess of 1,500m (4,950ft) approx.

Strong level of fitness essential, preferably for experienced walkers only! Must be capable of climbing and descending steep hills at a fast pace with restricted rest time in-between. Basic technical footwear, clothing and equipment a necessity! Waterproofs essential in bad conditions and for mountain walking. Recommend ankle support hiking boots but not essential! No trainers! No jeans!

5 PAWS+ (Technical)
These are exhilarating walks but to participate you must be a fit, experienced trekker with strong stamina and endurance. With the potential for high altitude peaks and multiple ascents, these strenuous walks will often cover mixed, very uneven terrain, trail off-piste or require a degree of scrambling. Sometimes open and exposed ridge sections may need to be crossed with vertigo inducing vertical drops to avoid. A trail may involve navigation of deep snow, slippery ice or across a field of boulders. Technical skills along with specialist equipment could be required - ropes, ice axe’s, crampons etc. Check event details for specific requirements.

Very strong level of fitness essential, experienced walkers only! Must be capable of climbing and descending steep, unstable hills at a fast pace with restricted rest time in-between. If specified, must possess the technical skills required. Good head for heights preferable but not essential. Good technical footwear, clothing and equipment a necessity! Waterproofs essential! Recommend ankle support hiking boots but not essential, unless specified! No trainers! No jeans!
