come hear speaker Troy Rice's Presentation on The National Estuary Program

Algae superbloom; mysterious deaths of manatees, pelicans, and dolphins; turtles with strange growths; and seagrass disappearing! The plot line of a science fiction movie? No, it is what’s happening in the Indian River Lagoon today! The lagoon has been identified as “an estuary in distress”. The lagoon is at a turning point. The coming months could herald a slow recovery of this unique ecosystem or a continued decline. Scientists, biologists, and specialists are redoubling their efforts to determine strategies for improving the long-term health of this waterway. The April Partnership/Sierra Club meeting features Troy Rice, Director of the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program. Troy will give a presentation on the National Estuary Program and projects being implemented to improve water quality and habitat in the IRL. He will also talk about the 2011 superbloom and 2012 brown tide bloom and their impact on loss of lagoon seagrass. The presentation begins at 7 PM, there will social hour with refreshments at 6:30 PM.

Note that there will also be a meeting on the 4th Thursday of May, none in June, July or August, and we will meet again in September.

But this is the only program scheduled at this time featuring Mr Rice speaking about the Indian River Lagoon.
