PADDLE THE BACK WATERS OF THE MISSISSIPPI

Meet at 11:00 AM Saturday April 20,2013

Did this last year. Start at Coville Park Red Wing MN. I want to time this to see the spring Migration of Birds. Last Year we saw eagles, ducks geese, pelicans, swans and more.

Every one should have a wet suit or a dry suite, a spray skirt and water proof gloves. Water temps will be in the low 30 degree range. If you you go in the water with out a good suit. Your survival will depend on your skills and the skills of the people around you. At that water temperature you will not be able to walk or paddle after 15 minutes in the water. I will allow anyone who wants to paddle to come along without a suite if they have a change of Warm cloths  in a dry bag.

I have done this trip several times without a mishap.

Bring a lunch & beverage

I will have Maps for everyone. Bring a gallon ziplock bag to keep it dry.

Never had a bad day paddling (or skiing). I am in for the next trip/ I just couldn't pass up one last chance to ski!

What a great day to kayak! Spring IS in the air, except this year it is a bit of a tease...(okay - a LOT of a tease!) My first trip launching at
Colville Park - absolutely wonderful area on the Mississippi (I'll be back soon.) LOTS of birds - it was truly a magical kayak adventure! Don't miss out on this one the next time around!

The paddle was superb. It was likely not over 43 degrees but with lots of sun and no wind it felt like 60 degrees. All went off without any mishaps. Lots of eagles birds. The Barges are up from Lake Peppin.

What a beautiful paddle you will have with the fresh snow. Wish I could join you, but I have one more hockey tournament to play.

Sorry, something just came up and I have an opportunity to see friends that live far off. Hope to catch the next paddle.

Several of us paddled the Snake river Saturday. Some were a little cold. I most of us were fine. No one went swimming. I did talk to a group of paddlers who paddled the back waters of the Mississippi last week. I was told eagles were in view at all times. Some of the back water areas were still had ice. But plenty of channels were open. The Long range forecast predicts temps in the 40's and partly sunny. Please make sure your RSVP is up to date. Dress warm if your coming
Be sure to bring a gallon bag to keep your map dry.

I'm going to say this is a definite "maybe" for me. We'll see what the weather is going to do.

Whoops, Ment to say April 20th May 20th I will be working.

  • Teresa H.

Hi Paul - Did you mean APRIL 20th instead of MAY 20th? Inquiring minds want to know...thanks!

    April 4, 2013

  • Paul B.

The majority of paddlers think the May 20th is going to be the better day for the Backwater of the Mississippi trip. We will postpone the event until then. The hope is the weather and water will be warmer then.

I just got a message on where I have stored my kayak and it appears that the snow is still blocking the entrance. I will have to pass on this Sunday, April 6th

    Hello Paddlers,
The weather outlook is not going the way I would like to see. I'm looking for some input from other paddlers. NOAA weather forecast predicts rain likely with high temps the the mid 40s. I see three options:

    1. Paddle no matter what on Saturday
    2. push the paddle back to Sunday (sun and no rain)
    3. Post pone to Saturday April 20th

If you plan to go please vote on your option preference

I also had a report of the conditions from friends that paddled last week end. The paddle was a good one. Some of the back channels were still iced in.

      #1 Sunday, #2 20th

It wouldn't be so much fun to paddle in 45 degrees and rain on Sat. April 20 may work for me. Sun does not work for me.

    April 2, 2013

  • Bill

My choices: #1 move to Sunday but maybe an hour earlier?
    #2 Go Saturday
    #3 Move to the 20th.

I just realized that my watercraft needs to be updated from last fall. I would prefer April 20th date for the Mississippi

  • Grady

Sounds like fun, but I'm sure I haven't acquired the required skills yet. I'll be looking for a meetup where I can try out some deep water/wet entry. Enjoy the outing.

    UP DATE
The (7) day calls for 30% chance of rain. That is not enough to call off the trip.
Be sure to update your RSVP

Unfortunately will be out of town.

I am refinishing my kayak this week! It was way overdue (I've never done it and it's been 8 years). The deck faded but what the heck!
I am looking forward to Saturday!

I have to be in Arizona that weekend. Hopefully it will get postponed to ta time I can make. Sorry.

I've never gotten into a kayak in deep water but did take the safety course offered through Midwest and did do quite a few dumps as part of that course. I'm going to think on this one a bit. It's like kicking it up a notch for me. I have waterproof socks but not wet suit. I can pack dry clothes in waterproof sack though.

    March 15, 2013

    • Louie

Time to kick it up another notch and get that wetsuit. :-)

I'm going to do - love the water! I think I will wait until we have a warm weather practice session with entry into deep water. Thanks Paul for the good information!

Phooey, not up for 30 degree water & I have no wet suit. Have fun!

  • Joannie J.

Not good dates for me -- probably out of town -- darn!

    March 18, 2013

  • Paul B.

Each person will need to determine if they have the skills, knowledge and gear to insure they will be safe in the conditions they will be paddling in. Not only is a wet suit and spray skirt important safety gear. But being able to do wet entry. (getting in a boat in deep water) Knowing how to brace and other paddle skills are important. A spray skirt will not only keep water out but warmth in. If you are new to kayaking and don't have the skills, knowledge and gear. This trip may not be for you. The first concern should be safety.

When the water warm up, we will find a warm sandy lake and do some training on wet entry

Never been cold water paddling before but I think heading out with a group with some experienced people in it is the best introduction I could ask for.

    March 14, 2013

  • Paul B.

    WOW,
I didn't know there was such interest in cold water paddling.
I updated the information about the trip. If your interested check it out. Note the Alternative bad weather date and cold water paddling info.

It depends on the date, and I would need to carpool. I live on the south edge of downtown Minneapolis near the Convention Center.

    March 14, 2013

  • Teresa H.

Let the kayaking season begin! I'll watch for the date and I hope to be there! (Even if the paddle is an ice breaker..!)

  • Mike S.

    let me know when

Thanks for organizing this. I would prefer if this were in early April rather than March. Just my two cents!

Sounds like fun. Let me know the date and hopefully it works for me.
