Paddle on a Stick !

Location finalized: We'll meet at Lake Minnetonka Regional Park, paddle around the islands and stop on Wawatasso Island for a picnic lunch, explore some of the 'informal' trails, and enjoy the day. Info about Wawatasso Island: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/13003786
This note is from the Park website: Wawatasso Island is located on Lake Minnetonka south of Enchanted Island and north of Smithtown Bay. It consists of about 34 acres and has long been a favorite beaching spot for boaters, and there are informal hiking trails. Bring something to drink while paddling and a sandwich or picnic-style lunch for yourself. After we tire of paddling, those interested may meet for a beverage somewhere.

We need a "State Fair" kind-of-event. To that end, I'm proposing a new event: "Paddle on a Stick". I'm thinking something along the lines of last year's Paddle & Picnic on Lake Minnetonka, but I'm open to any suggestions YOU might have. Something in August, bring a lunch, maybe include a little exploration hike, some adult beverages after.

And that is not a no wake area according to the map I looked at. I've been wanting to do this for a while but not sure now, if my kayak will stay a float. Different kayaks for different waters... any thoughts?

I have a Old Town Loon 138. It's long, wide and heavy. It has no secondary tipping edge (something like that) I was told that it wouldn't do well in waves that the big boats on minnetonka dish out. People have been known to flip from them with the wrong boat/kayak.

    I'll be there Saturday!

Renee & others: The flag on the map as shown I think marks the location of the park entrance. (no fee) The boat launch is easier to see if you switch to "satellite" view. Yup, Lake Minnetonka is a big body of water. Depending on what you count as lakeshore, it's rumored to have more shoreline than California.

K, I just mapquested the address provided, is the launch site at this location? Looks like a rather large lake & I'm sure there are numerous points to put in??? = )

Rolled down to IA & grabbed my brother's yak so I'm in! I'll have to roll out about 3:30, but can get a lil paddling in. = )

I have also decided to bail because your location is quite a drive for me as well. I live on the east side of Saint Paul/Oakdale area. Hope another event is more central. Have fun. Thanks.

WOW that is a busy weekend! I am very interested in exploring the Chain of Lakes in or near White Bear. This weekend doesn't work for me and I would so like to meet the group. I, too, would need to rent a kayak. I was kayaking the Mississippi near Clearwater three weeks ago. Want to get out again!

I do not have a kayak or a canoe. Can you rent them there or?

May I suggest Lake Minnetonka Regional Park? Paddle around the islands there, stop at Wawatasso Island for a little lunch, explore the 'informal' trails. http://www.panoramio.com/photo/13003786
This particular park does not offer any rentals however.

Lebanon Hills Park in Eagan? A little portaging never hurt anyone and I hear they have great picnic spots while you are portaging. I believe you can rent here as well. Not sure if just canoes, or if they have kayaks too: http://www.co.dakota.mn.us/LeisureRecreation/CountyParks/Locations/LebanonHills/default.htm

Has anyone considered the lake at Willow River State Park? No motors allowed and the lake leads into a river that leads to a wonderful waterfall. I've been there many times.
