October 21st Meeting

From: Steven
Sent on: Tuesday, September 15, 2009 8:36 PM
We would like to invite you to join us in a round table style discussion of Buddhism. If you RSVP yes, you can recommend a topic for discussion or ask a question. The aim of these discussions is to answer questions about Buddhism (if we know them) and deepen our understanding of the Buddha's Dharma. The format is designed to be a sharing of ideas between Buddhists of different schools and non-Buddhists interested in Buddhism.

First hour topic this meeting;
1. Dukkha (suffering, lack or unsatisfactoriness presented as the second Dharma seal.) Due to the impermanent nature of phenomena nothing found in the physical world or even the psychological realm can bring lasting deep satisfaction. Happiness based upon the conditioned world cannot last as the conditions themselves are impermanent.

Recommended 2nd hour topics/questions;
1. Each person, in turn will discuss briefly what drew them to Buddhism. We will then discuss what it is about Buddhism that seems to appealing to westerners.
2. Discuss the following quote by Patrul Rinpoche and its implications.
"Do not take lightly small misdeeds,
Beleiving they can do no harm:
Even a tiny spark of fire
Can set alight a mountain of hay.

Do not take lightly small good deeds,
Believing they can hardly help.
For drops of water one by one
In time can fill a giant pot."

If you wish to come you can RSVP here: October 21st Meeting
