Wales - The Mountains of Eryri - The Fortress (Mt Snowdon)
Join myself and others as we hike up one of Wales most famous and talked about mountains. Standing at 1085m it is conquered and feared by many, unfortunately it also claims a few lives every year. The Fortress or Snow Hill aka Snowdon, gives its name to the National Park, although it is just one mountain inside the largest of the three national parks of Wales (845 sq.miles). The area in known in Welsh as Eryri and contains several mountain ranges, with 15 peaks over 3,000 feet. The highest point is Yr Wyddfa (3,560 ft), named after Rhita Gawr, a giant killed by King Arthur and said to be buried in a cairn (Gwyddfa Rhita ) on top of the mountain. Into one of its lakes, Llyn Llydaw, the mighty Excalibur, (Caledfwlch ) was thrown by Arthur, mortally wounded nearby. This is a place of legends and myths, rugged and ever-changing with the seasons.
