Direction and Parking:
Direction: From Topanga Canyon Boulevard, turn east on Entrada Road; that’s to the right if you’re coming from Pacific Coast Highway. Follow Entrada Road by turning left at every opportunity until you arrive at Topanga State Park. The trailhead is at the end of the parking lot.
Parking: $ 10 if you park inside the park. Street parking is free.
A 7.7 mile half loop in one of the Los Angeles area’s most accessible parks. Some classic, Sycamore-covered geography, with meadows, boulder formations and outcroppings, and rolling chaparral ridges. Excellent views of the Pacific Ocean, the Santa Monica Mountains and the far reaching sprawl of the Los Angeles City.
The trail is mostly fire roads so the trail is open and exposed. Owing to the large parking lot and picnic area at the beginning of the trail at Trippet Ranch, it’s also very popular among the local hiking groups.
This hike is a little longer because we will be doing some rock scramble around Cathedral Rock and summit Temescal Peak.
We plan to start this hike from the parking lot heading generally northeast along the Topanga Fire Road. We will then take the Eagle Spring Fire Road to appreciate the beauty of the Eagle Rock from below. At the junction of Temescal Fire Road, we will turn right to summit Temescal Peak. Upon reaching the peak, we will head back to the intersection of Topanga Fire Road but instead of going below the rock, we will summit the rock to soak in the beautiful vista from atop the Eagle Rock.
Warning and Disclaimer:
If you have prior medical condition or a family history of illnesses pertaining to heart, lungs, brain, etc. that can be aggravated by heat and physical exertion, this is not the hike for you.
If you have never done a hike of this distance or difficulty before, this hike will be very difficult for you. It may well be your death march. The mountain is not going anywhere. We will schedule this event again in the future. Do it when your mind and body are ready.
