Daypack (with a 3 liter water bladder)
Hiking poles (preferably with flip locks)
Bandana (as a dust mask)
Camera
First aid kit
Hat (straw hat is much cooler)
Pocket knife
Sunglasses
Sunscreen and lip balm
Watch
Toilette paper
Energy bars
Water
Food

For emergency use:
Small mirror
Cigarette lighter
Sol emergency bivvy
Whistle
Compass
Map

When distance is over 18 miles:
Water filter

WHAT TO WEAR:
During regular hikes:
Super wicking shirt
Pants made with breathable textile
Hiking shoes with good traction

When day time temperature drops below 60 degree:
Winter pants
Wicking base layers
Medium weight mid layer
Insulated Jacket
Wind resistant shell jacket

When day time temperature drops below 50 dgree:
Winter pants
Wicking base layers
Medium weight mid layer
Down jacket
Wind resistant shell jacket
Insulated gloves
Wool socks
Beanie

When day time temperature drops below 40 degree:
(It's dangerous to hike in this weather. Snow could fall and wind could pick up at moment's notice , but if you insist, at a minimum you need the followings.)
Winter pants
Long johns
Wicking base layer
Light weight mid layer
Medium weight mid layer
Down jacket
Water resistant, hooded shell jacket
Water resistant, insulated gloves
Heavy wool socks
Wool Beanie
Hand warmer

When snow is on the ground:
Water-resistant pants
Mircospikes (packed snow)
Snowshoes (soft snow)
Water-resistant hiking boots
Wool socks
Gaters

When snow is falling:
Do something else.
