What do you hope to get out of Experience Design Perth?

My goals with UX Perth (not being entirely sure what you do) is to gain further knowledge to enhance my ability to make great content and useable websites. I am interested in all things web, and have a voracious appetite to learning. Being relatively new to everything i have spent my time becoming very familiar with HTML, CSS and not JavaScript and jQuery. Other areas i want to improve on including - making interesting designs using Photoshop and Illustrator, learn PHP and Ruby on Rails and making a web application or possibly even a mobile application. I am also very interested in how the web is constantly changing, i am especially interested in 'responsive web design' and see it as an interesting solution to a 'problem' that we are having with a wide array of devices which can access the internet. My goal is to make websites that are user friendly, with interest content in a interesting and innovative design.

What is your role, how does it relate to User or Customer Experience Design?

I do not currently have a professional role in the web design community, but i am interested in being a part of that community in the future as my skills develop. My goal, and the reason that i first began learning about web design was to make a professional website for the business that i am working on for my guitar teaching. I realised that to have a successful business i needed a way for people to find me and quickly understand what i was about and whether i would be a person that they would like to be taught by.

How do you define User or Customer Experience Design?

To me user experience is creating web sites that honour content above visual design. Visual design is of course a huge part of user experience design, but only if it helps the user access the content of the website and does not impede their ability to find what they are looking for. I feel that a good user experience design understand the wants and needs of the user and gives them access to what they need, whether it be an article, contact information, photographs or whatever the user needs. A site with a good user experience does not confuse the user, or make them think overly hard about how to use your site. Logical hierarchy of information, good use of typography and colour, and logical navigation are important aspects of user experience design.

I first gained an interest in web design about six months ago. I have several online learning memberships including, i have also been very influenced by "Designing with Web Standards" by Jeffrey Zeldman.
