Designing for devices - both Big and Small

Michael Zrobok & Chris Loh are going to take us through their experiences and ideas on different ends of the device scale, from small portable mobiles to large table top displays.

We encourage everyone to come prepared with some of their own device ideas on these topics as there will be plenty of group discussions.

**Design Environmental Experiences using Context Aware Devices
a case study by Michael Zrobok

Michael Zrobok has worked on apps that require users to engage with the actual physical space that the application was being run in. Due to a lack of public ideas and case studies for guidance he had to improvise his own methodology for undertaking the knowledge gathering phase and used it to inform the user journey. Lately Michael has been reflecting on how to fine tune his approach to using the current crop of context aware devices to engage with the physical environment.

In this open conversation Michael will share some of his (and our) lessons about these type of context aware projects, exploring how scenario building can be done when the environment plays an active role; how personas need to be modified to address physical traits that can impede/enhance the environment; and how mapping the journey can be used.

**Table-top tablets/PCs: options for massive interactive surfaces
by Chris Loh

Large table PC/tablet-like devices like the 27-inch Lenovo IdeaCentre Horizon, or 3M's 84-inch Multitouch Table, are going to create - literally - massive new options for apps and media requiring new interface design. e.g. http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/lenovo-ideacentre-horizon-27/4505-3118_7-35561100.html

For this session Chris Loh will give us an introduction to the different types of devices and applications out there, then we'll break in to smaller groups and discuss what are the merits, interface design opportunities and challenges inherent in each. To make the group conversations more interesting everyone is encouraged to find and bring along examples of what people are doing, or can do, with these interfaces.

Thanks Ben for inviting me to lead that chat, sorry I had to leave early Chris but next time we catch up I'd love to hear about your interactive children's ebook project as this is my area of personal interest too.
