Agile UX: An introduction to UX Design in the world of Agile, Lean & Continuous

In the world of software development, Agile has become the latest buzz word to embrace. More and more development teams are putting up card walls and proudly proclaiming that they're gone Agile.

What does this mean for us as designers and how we fit in to the mix?

No longer do we have to work in a way that focuses on just producing design deliverables a pitching them over the fence to developers to bastardise.

We now have the opportunity to become an integrated part of the process. By embracing principles of Agile, Lean and Continuous we can change the way we work and get out of the deliverables business and supercharge our ability to create great experiences.

For this evening Toby Pritchard and Ben Melbourne will give an introduction to the principles and practices of Agile software development, and how that changes the way that UX Design works.

That one I'm about to make available on my blog. I'm almost finished a blog post about Collaborative Design Workshops, which will include it. I'll be sure to post the link when it's done.

What about that awesome time-lapse inception video?

No worries - I kind of assumed that. I guess I'll have to make do with the 5 pages of chicken scrawl I took as you spoke :)

Unfortunately I can't really share the deck in this case. There's large chunks I'd have to take out which will make it pointless. If there's any specifics anyone is interested in I'm more than happy to follow up on them though.

Yes, thanks Ben and Toby. Full of great ideas grounded in practice. Any chance you could post the deck?

Great introduction on just how good a friend agile can be to UX. I hope to hear about some of you taking the leap into agile as a result! Nice double-act Ben and Toby.

Hi all, I forgot to mention last night that anyone interested in learning more about Agile UX should check out the Agile Experience Design book - http://www.amazon.com/Agile-Experience-Design-Designers-Continuous/dp/0321804813

It's written by some fellow ThoughtWorkers who I learnt a lot from. It's got lot's of great detail about all of the practices we discussed last night.

A great primer with proper context in the examples to reinforce how UX fits into this type of workflow

I know The Edge provides free rooms but they don't have bar. Maybe they are worth reconsidering if that is not such a priority.

If anyone has any thoughts about this or suggestions for venues I'd love to hear them as it's been something that has been on my mind for a while now. Thanks for raising it!

Thanks for the reply Ben, yes the edge has all the proper infrastructure and facilities minus de bar. Perhaps the Web Design meetup model (meetup - then move to a nearby bar to have a drink and chat) could work in the future? I'll do some research into options. Cheers, Andres

Hi Andres, you raise a very good question. We have been deliberating on this one for a while now.

In the last 12 months our numbers have been growing consistently which has been great. However, it's come at the cost of starting to outgrow the ThoughtWorks office.

It's great to have the convenience of the facilities at our disposal (not to mention the free pizza & beer), but it does have a cost of limiting numbers.

The challenge we've faced is being able to find a suitable venue that fits our needs. I spent some time a year (or more) ago looking around trying to find somewhere and couldn't find anywhere that met these criteria: - It's free - we don't have any funding and everywhere I found insisted on a minimal bar spend.
    - A private space where we can make/not be interrupted by noise
    - A projector All this is going on the assumption that we want to find a licensed venue that has food and alcohol, which I personally feel adds to the sociability of the group.

Hi guys, Any chance of having the meetups in a larger venue? I haven't been able to attend one as they always get full very quickly. Shame to miss out on such interesting topics.

    Cheers,
    Andres
