Catskills Hike - Huckleberry Point

  • Dec 8, 2013 · 9:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

The main attraction of this hike is the magnificent vista from Huckleberry Point.  The view includes Overlook Mtn, the Hudson River, New England, and the awesome steepness of the walls of Plattekill Clove.  Note that this is a "discovery hike", which means I have not done it before.  There will be some consultation with the map and my trail guide as we go along.

Hike appears on NY-NJ Trail Conference map # 41 (northeastern Catskill Trails)

Round trip distance: 4.8 miles

Elevation change:  about 650 feet

Level of hike: intermediate

We'll hike at a relaxed pace - no one will be left behind

What to bring:  water, snacks/lunch, **MICROSPIKES**

Suggested donation:  $2 to help offset cost of subscription that meetup charges to organizers.

Carpooling:  Meet at New Paltz park and ride at 7:50.  Park and ride is just off exit 18 of I87 (NYS Thruway).  After going through the toll booths, the Park and Ride lot is immediately on the left.  If you plan to meet here, post a comment or email me so I know who to expect.

If not carpooling, be at the trail head by 9:30

Directions to the trail head parking area (note that this hike begins on the Kaaterskill High Peak trail, so the parking area sign may reflect that):[masked]

Do not attempt to use the "map" link near the top of this listing - it will take you to New York City.

Cancellation info: If I need to cancel I'll send email the night before.

Just returned from GL/Panther hike today. About 2 inches of snow throughout but with melting and refreezing tonight IT WILL BE ICY tomorrow. The hike is undoable without Microspikes that Jeff advised previously (or equivalent traction device); you will wear them for the whole hike, there is no dry ground. Tomorrow is the last day of hunting season so don't forget the bright colors. Jeff's suggestion of gaiters is a very good one; you'll get wet without them.

Family just told me they are coming for the weekend. Not sure they will be on the road in time for me to get there. Next time, enjoy the hike!

I have the "pro" version of Yaktraks. They have always served me well on the icy paths around my horse barns. There is another model that has spikes and also a more basic model. Will I be allowed to hike with them?

Nancy - okay, bring the "pro" version and we'll see how they do.

I would be interested in car pooling from New Paltz. I'm a fair weather hiker though so if it's raining....

Platt Clove Rd turns into W. Saugerties Rd - going down the back mountain road. Are we to turn onto Josh Rd. or go past Josh Rd. ?

    • Jeff S

Pass Josh Rd and go about 0.5 mi to parking.

I will be coming from Salt Point/Rhinebeck if anyone wants to carpool with me.

With regard to hunting, strongly suggest you get an orange vest and orange hat, found in sporting goods stores and probably hiking stores. This is just to be absolutely sure. I've hiked through many hunting seasons and never been shot at. Absolutely DO NOT wear brown!!!
