Perceptual Computing introduction & HTML5 Game Development

Hi Ultracoderzzz,

Here is the 2nd edition of the Ultracode Berlin. Same organizing team, same venue & same configuration for this developer meetup focused on game development with a main speak about Perceptual Computing* and some community speak about HTML5-related game.

*Perceptual computing enables you to create app using close-range hand and finger tracking, speech recognition, face analysis, and augmented reality. The Perceptual Computing SDK is dedicated to C/C++, C#, Unity, openFramework, Processing, Augmented reality & HCI/NUI developers. Check out some demos scrolling down.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

19:00 - Opening

19:30 - Introducing by Alex & Rachel \o/

19:35 - "Perceptual Computing: what, why, how?" by Sulamita Garcia, Intel Technical Evangelist EMEA :

Hi I am Sulamita Garcia, I'll give a talk about how perceptual computing will fundamentally change people interaction with their PCs in intuitive, natural and engaging ways. I'll show the fundamentals of Intel Perceptual Computing SDK, an overview of the sample codes included and I'll demonstrate my skills at some games already available. During the break, you can check the applications and play by yourself to have the real experience.

20:05 - "Community  talks" : come & present us your games! Natives or HTML5/JS-related, you are free to propose a 15min talk, just have a word about it with our beloved Rachel by email.

One of our talented community speakers will be Rafael Wawer of thesetales who will join to speak about the technical aspects of shading/lighting on an html5/webgl game he is currently working on. Also joining us will be Javier Diaz who will give a live demo of his first game experiments using JS, Allan Lavell from Twisted Oak Studios in Canada will give a talk titled 'Improving HTML5 gaming aesthetic using fullscreen immersion' and if we're lucky, Rico (Suave?) will speak a little bit about his webgl game!

21:00 - Demos of perceptual computing game, beer & pizza

Not so sexy talks, learnt nothing new. The organisation and place perfect, did some enjoyable networking.

thx for this instructive feedback, I understand when you are asking something more about learning/teaching smthg. We are trying another format which is about livecoding in a short time with more interaction with/from the audience, let me know what you think

Hi Xantomen, thank you very much for you detailed feedback. I completely understand your perspective as I felt similar in the past in conferences, and I'm sorry we haven't deliver according to your expectations.

The debate about how much to tell in a talk and into what kind of details is always at question. As this would be the first time we would be talking about Perceptual Computing in the Ultracode Berlin, we though would be better to give an overview rather than going into some in depth details. We had several people who weren't C/C++ developers and they would be left in a void if we would focus on that. So we decided for the more introductory approach. But we definitely want to present code samples and techniques, and sure to keep this in mind for the next ones. Hope we get it better next time!

    Hello all,
with the permission of Alexandre, I'd like to mention our coming game jams.

    1) This saturday we have our monthly minijam, open to anyone interested in making games, with a focus on experimentation and prototyping. See more details in the event description.
    http://www.meetup.com/game-developers-berlin/events/126423602/

    2) Saturday next week we have another jam/workshop oriented to beginners. It's centered on a tool called Twine that requires no programming skills at all, all you need is a keyboard and your imagination to come up with nice stories. Please take a look:

Please note that perceptual computing is only at the moment available on natives languages (C/C++, C#, Unity, openFramework, openGL) but that will be an introduction anyway :)

Damn, would love to come to this actually as I'm quite interested in the topic of browser games but unfortunately in London during this time. Hopefully there'll be another one soon...? :(
