What we're about

Weekly neighborhood meditation sitting groups that are open to everyone and all are welcome. Each class will consist of 30 minutes of meditation, Q&A, dharma and conversation. Cultivation of community is important and all voices are vital.

The teachings are taken from the the wisdom and compassion teachings of the Buddha, primarily drawn from the Theravada tradition which is often called Insight (vipassana) practice. Although these are traditional teachings, the emphasis is to make them accessible and investigate how these teachings can be utilized in our daily lives. Everyone is welcome and there is no need to believe anything, or consider oneself 'Buddhist'.

Undefended Dharma refers to the idea of living with an undefended heart. Several years ago Mary began to investigate this concept and believes this is the root of what the Buddha asks us to do in his teachings and it is now the lens through which she sees the world. How do we defend ourselves and how do we free ourselves? This has been a rich journey that continues with ever unfolding subtlety and is a path towards freedom.

Classes are taught by Mary Stancavage. Mary has practiced meditation, yoga, and cultivated a spiritual practice for over 30 years and in 2009 was empowered to teach Buddhadharma. Mary teaches classes, retreats and does individual mentoring. She has taught at mindfulness at recovery centers, has co-facilitated Year-to-Live groups since 2008, and has had a weekly dharma class for ten years. She completed the Buddhist Chaplaincy Program at the Sati Center and served as volunteer chaplain at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. She served as Director of Against the Stream for ten years. She also served as Executive Director of the Mind Body Awareness Project for two. Mary sits on the boards of the Buddhist Insight Network and CLUE-LA: Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice. Along with teaching she continues to investigate what it means to live with an undefended heart. Fun fact: Mary has a Masters Degree from UCLA and worked as an archaeologist in Syria.
