  • This location is shown only to members

IMPORTANT CHANGES: We have increased the attendance limit to 75 and will be recording this event. Since there is a waiting list, if you cannot attend please change your RSVP to allow others to join us.

BRING A LAPTOP with the latest Unity 4.x installed (http://www.unity3d.com/download).

Arrive before 7:00pm to be seated, setup, and copy some relevant training materials to your computer.

The Global Game Jam is coming up January 25th, make sure to sign up at www.ggjvancouver.com. I want to throw together a crash course in using Unity for newbies intended to bring them up to speed in time for GGJ.

The pacing was really fast. Not enough time allocated to cover the topics that were on the agenda.

The pre-event tutorials were excellent too. I went through them in one sitting like I was snacking on m&ms!

Great presentation I learnt a lot. I feel like I saved a lot of time that would have been spent searching online for tutorials.

  • Chuck B.

Terrific, well prepared and well presented. Great value.

I was able to learn a lot about unity. Sometimes it was hard to follow along but considering everyone was at different level it was somewhat understandable.

    Nice job Jodon!

What room will we be in?

    January 16, 2013

  • Tim H.

I can't seem to find the link to those tutorials, and I've been through the comments a dozen times. Is it just under my nose somewhere?

    January 16, 2013

    • Jessica J.

They were sent in an email titled "Interactive 3D Tutorial". Copy of part of the e-mail:
"The only pre-requisite is downloading Unity. You can get the tutorials for free here:

      http://www.codingjar....

Click "Products" then click "Unity Interactive Tutorials" and you're done!"

      Oh right, thanks. :)

Hi there! Would there be any way the capacity for this event can be increased, so that more newbies can join this awesome pre-Game Jam training? I am currently on the waiting list, but would really love an opportunity to be in this workshop! Thank you.

      Thank you so much! :)

This is awesome news Jodon. I do believe we owe you some beers :)

  • Jonathan C.

Would it be possible to post notes/materials for the topics you'll be talking about for the people that can't attend?

    January 15, 2013

  • Jodon

Should have noted: If you do not have a laptop/cannot bring one, we are going to try and pair you up with a buddy. Think of it as Pre-GGJ socializing :).

  • Alex B.

As much as I'd love to attend, I'm also not that much of a newbie so I'll free up my spot. Might end up being next door doing some Unity over at blackbird though, so I might briefly pop in and say hi.

    January 14, 2013

  • Matt M.

Hey folks, I am going to free up my spot. I'm not quite a newbie anymore...

What version of Unity do we need?

    January 9, 2013

    • Yanni F.

7 tutorials, it will take you roughly an hour to go though these, plus some setup time if you need to setup Unity.

      January 9, 2013

    • Jodon

Do you need to go through them? Well it depends. If you're serious about using Unity and familiarizing yourself, for sure you should. If you're just attending to see what you can do with Unity, obviously not. I won't hold it against you either way ;).

      January 10, 2013

  • Tim H.

Could we look at some sort of live stream for those of us on the list (especially if it continues to expand)? Or even recording it and posting it on YouTube after the fact?

    January 9, 2013

    • Jodon

If anyone has the recording equipment and experience, we could do that. I'm not sure how well it would work if I just recorded my screen as we would need the audio.

      January 9, 2013

    • Yanni F.

      Audio ? Phhffft

      January 9, 2013

  • Nathan T.

How much previous programming experience do you need?

    November 19, 2012

    • Taylan

Btw, you can have a crash course in javascript at codecademy.com - really good interactive tutorials and you can breeze through fast if you already have some object oriented programming experience.

      January 7, 2013

    • Jodon

Any C-based programming experience is fine. For the programming part I'll be skipping the basics (what is a float / int). The programming part will come last so all those who will never program anyway can leave without missing anything relevant.

Hello! I'm trying to organize some topics for this thing. Some of you joined before I had questions in the RSVP. If you were one of the first 30 to join, can you please answer the polls at: http://www.meetup.com/UnityGames/polls/. This will will help me target the talk better.

    Much appreciated!

Kimberly Voll helped secure a location for us. I'll post a desired outline before the new year.
