Berkeley Secret Trails and Panoramic Hill Hike

Lets's hike some of the Berkeley Secret Trails and Panoramic Hill. We will meet at North Berkeley BART and leave at 1:10 sharp and head out along Berkeley's newest in-town off-road biking/hiking trail to downtown, then up through campus and on to Panoramic Hill. The approximate mileage of this hike is 7-8. Be sure to bring a pint of water, as parts of the hike are away from urban services. Although a very steep section of trail down Panoramic Hill will be bypassed, small parts of the descending trail are still rather steep. Wear shoes with some grip on the sole, not sandals or other smooth-soled shoes. The end point is a pub near Ashby BART.

We will take a lunch break so bring something to eat if you will be hungry.

A BART strike or heavy rain may cause us to cancel this hike.

That was a strenuous hike! I'm sore the next day. (It may be partly because I was jogging 12 blocks before the hike to get to my local BART station because I was running late.) I did the descent from Panoramic Way to the Claremont Canyon Preserve a couple of times before the actual hike and never got a poison oak reaction. I am susceptible! I hope no one is getting a rash now!

I scoped out this hike for Susan. The steep part is a broad hillside with a well-worn trail going straight for about 50 ft at a steep incline. However, there is also a less-worn trail with switchbacks crossing the main trail. (The hardest part may be hopping across the main trail on the switch-back trail.) I wouldn't think it is a problem -- and I'm *not* an especially adventurous hiker -- except I was on another hike with this group where some people had a problem with a similar dirt trail. We can all look at the trail before descending. Some people may choose to slide on their butts for 10 ft or so. If I've over-estimated the group's ruggedness, there is a street to follow all the way down. That would make the hike more urban and perhaps a mile longer -- but the group can decide.

The butt-slide may be only about 5 ft. Really, I don't think it's hard.

    Hello,

I am new to hiking, this group was recommended, so looking forward to what this is all about. On a side note, BART is on strike ... Per the invite information, is this event now cancelled?

    Regards,

BART is on strike today but maybe by Saturday it will be over, so we will decide much closer to Saturday.
