Note: I added an end date of July 12, but we can use help any days beginning this weekend. Mostly July 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. We are covered for June 26 through July 3.
Hi there, we are looking for volunteers to help out when the peregrine falcon chick leaves the nest last week of June and first week of July. This is not a high action volunteer gig! You will be sitting, watching the nestbox located on the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. This little guy needs help when he fledges, they can't fly up at first so they usually land somewhere in the gardens. We then have a DNR rep take it back up to the top of the building. Once he leaves the nest, things heat up! For the first 10 days after he leaves the nest, we also keep track of where he has flown to, just in case his idea of a good time is traffic on South Temple or Main Street!
You can volunteer as much time as you like. We need people especially mornings and evenings as that is when they fly most ~ its cooler for him and you too. Most of us give 3 hours at a time but you can spend more! We have lots of fun as a team, plus you get to use a walkie talkie, how can you beat that!
Call Bob Walters at Utah DNR for more details. (801)[masked]
There is a tour/walkabout tomorrow Thurs, 6/20 that offers more details. 6:00pm meet at the gardens/sidewalk S. Temple
At this time looking for ten people to add to the team. Its hot, bring water, sunscreen, sunglasses, field glasses if you have them, and a large thin towel (for throwing over the bird if you have to).
