PLEASE READ: This is not a totally open jam session. This is for folks who have already jammed with this group, and/or personal connections of folks who have jammed with us.
Folks who come to this session should have basic competence on their instrument (or ears/voice, for singers), and have basic understanding of form and time to be able to improvise (whether comping or soloing) on jazz standards. I've shared some of my thoughts on how the session might work here: http://www.meetup.com/Vancouver-Jazzy-Jams/messages/boards/thread/49737935 . My intention isn't to be exclusive or rigid, but instead to have fun and learn together, starting from a basic common understanding and foundation.
This session will be limited to 8 musicians, first-come, first-serve. I reserve host prerogative to make exceptions and edit the RSVP list in the interest of rounding out balanced instrumentation for a good session.
I have a grand piano, a drum set, microphone (for vocals), and a Roland keyboard amp that also works well for a bass and/or microphone.
Stuff to bring:
• Fake book(s). I've been using the Real Book (Hal Leonard) series for years, and am now getting more into the New Real Book (Sher) series. I have these books at my place (for C instruments), plus a copy machine if we need it. All of that said, I'd like us to challenge ourselves to know some tunes by ear and memory more than lead sheets as much as possible. If you have tune(s) you'd like to play, please bring in copies of lead sheets for C instruments as well as your own instrument.
• Music stands
Tunes: We can play from the usual selection that Ian has been compiling http://www.meetup.com/Vancouver-Jazzy-Jams/pages/Jazz_Standards_Songbook/ . Any other suggested tunes, let's talk about them in the comments section below.
