Tucked inside the bustle and noise of busy Denman, Davie and Burrard Streets are the quiet and quaint residential streets of the West End. The "West End" was Vancouver's first upscale neighbourhood and when walking these streets you can almost get a feel for what life may have been like here in the early 1900's. (okay perhaps that's a stretch, but bare with me!)
While most of the mansions and homes from that time have been destroyed.....there are still traces of what was....some very well preserved homes and boarding houses, churches, neighbourhood grocery stores, schools and a firehall. In the 1980's, the residential streets were blocked and calmed to squeeze traffic out of the area.....At their junctions, mini-parks were built and throughout the area a respect for the preservation and restoration of the area's heritage became a priority and a sense of neighborhood pride has emerged. The west end is a jumbled mix of many era's...it is down to earth, stylish and welcoming so let's enjoy a stroll through one of Vancouver's most charming neighbourhoods.
Where will we meet?
We will meet across from St. Paul's Hospital on the SW corner of Thurlow and Comox. The route we have chosen is NOT a straight line....it will be sent to you by email, when the RSVP's close, so print it if necessary or make sure you can access it from your smart phone.....just in case the group doesn't stay together.... :-)
What should I bring?
A Camera, It doesn't matter if you have a cameraphone, a point and shoot camera or a Digital SLR, any camera is fine, however, this is a residential area, let's not freak the residents out with tons of gear, please keep it minimal. Wear comfortable clothes & shoes and bring your sunscreen.
How do I get there? For transit info....www.translink.ca ....for information on downtown parking lots:
