Urban Decay, Grunge and Grafitti...a walk through Strathcona to 1000 Parker

  • Sep 1, 2013 · 9:45 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This photo-walk will take us through the southeast section of Strathcona, Vancouver's oldest residential neighbourhood and on into what remains of the industrial area....some of it won't be pretty, but it will be most interesting......urban decay, grunge and graffiti. Among other things, we will come across what is thought to be the oldest grocery store in the city, the second oldest school, a cobblestone street, houses and buildings  that are over 100 years old, railway tracks that are no longer used.....and a gelato shop that has over 200 flavours!

The route will lead us to "One Thousand Parker" and the area surrounding it.

One Thousand Parker is a sprawling remnant of Vancouver's Industrial past. It is a labyrinth of wood, brick and cement buildings built between 1916 and the mid-1970s. It’s quirky....the entrance is on George street, not Parker, and there are railway tracks running between two wings.....it is a strong contender for the funkiest building in Vancouver. It was built for the Restmore Furniture and Bedding Company and was once a Woodward’s warehouse, but today it’s largely occupied by painters, sculptors, photographers, potters and woodworkers who appreciate the open spaces, beautiful high ceilings and more importantly the cheap rent!

1) Where will we meet?

On East Hastings Street...in front of the Pink Pearl Restaurant. The photo-walk route will return us to this area.

We will meet-up after the walk for lunch/drink/coffee/snack AT THE LONDON PUB...700 MAIN STREET at EAST GEORGIA. It is less than a 10 minute drive from where we are meeting/ending the photo-walk.

2) What should I bring?

A Camera, It doesn't matter if you have a cameraphone, a point and shoot camera or a Digital SLR, any camera is fine.

A tripod (optional)

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes (ladies this isn't a place for open-toed shoes and flip-flops) be sure you are comfortable...

3) How do I get there?

For transit info....www.translink.ca . If you are driving, street parking is available.

RSVP Protocol - if you RSVP to this event and then can't make it please have the courtesy to change your RSVP so that people on the waiting list will have a chance to participate. If you are on the wait list and can't make it, please remove your name as well.

We are enthusiastic about photography and lovers of the City of Vancouver....however neither of us are qualified to answer any technical questions you may have...there may be more skilled members participating on the walk to answer your questions...if not Barry has kindly offered to answer any questions by email.

AT ALL TIMES, PLEASE BE MINDFUL OF YOURSELF AND YOUR FELLOW PHOTO WALKERS, YOUR PROPERTY AND YOUR SURROUNDINGS!

AFTER THE MEET-UP DON'T FORGET TO UPLOAD UPTO EIGHT OF YOUR BEST IMAGES.

Hope to see you there!

Jan, Kelly and Tracy

1000 Parker is a dreamland. Reasoning and logic are largely lost in the creative thinking.

This applies to the waiting list as well...thanks

  • Ana

This sounds very interesting. May I ask why only 30 people?

    August 29, 2013

    • kelly

Hi Ana, we have capped it at 30 because we are walking through a residential neighbourhood...I spoke with a couple of folks that do historical walks in Strathcona and that is the maximum number they allow on their walks...stay on the list...you know how this works...

Besides being a portrait and event freelance photographer, I'm also an upholsterer available on call for three different shops, one of them is in that building at 1000 Parker.
