Parade of Lost Souls - Secret Souls Walk

  • Oct 26, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

THE EVENT WILL START ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD AT BRITANNIA HIGH SCHOOL - 1001 COTTON DR.  ENTRANCES ARE ON WILLIAMS AND MACLEAN.  THE EVENT RUNS FROM 6:30 - 9:30PM.

Parking is limited so please consider alternate ways of transport.

"Honour the Dead and Wake the Living" is the cry that rises above the snaking mass of people dressed in their best representations of ghoulish, devilish lost spirits. In a world where many fear death, this is a night to grab it by the horns and celebrate its powerful aura and source of creative darkness. It is a time to break free from whatever holds you down and respectfully embrace your fears.

This moving spectacle will test your senses as fireworks are lit to frighten away evil spirits, faces are ghastly painted, shrines are honoured and prayers are issued for the peaceful souls of lost loved ones.

Taking place in its usual haunting grounds of East Vancouver, performers and event guides will begin leading 30-minute walking tours at 6:30, making their way through the streets and back alleys of the Commercial Drive area. Volunteers led by Public Dreams Society and Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret will be stationed at the Britannia Community Centre whispering directions of where and when to join these staggered groups as they meander along this year's secret detour route. Gatekeepers will lead participants through interactive performances, art installations, shadow plays and more.

This is an opportunity for you to pull out that Hallowe'en costume you always say you are going to put on, but never do, and participate in a great evening.  **Costumes are option, but do add to the atmosphere of the event - so don't be shy.

Due to the cutbacks for Arts programs this year Public Dreams Society is looking for a $5 donation to help with the costs of the event.  So please keep that in mind if you plan to participate.

We are going to open this event to a large group so everyone can participate.

1. What should I bring?

A Camera, It doesn't matter if you have a camera phone, a point and shoot camera or a Digital SLR, any camera is fine.  If you plan to actually participate in the walk you might want to just take a camera phone or point and shoot.

A tripod (optional)

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, be sure you are comfortable and warm.

2) How do I get there?

For transit information check out www.translink.ca

RSVP Protocol - if you RSVP to this event and then can't make it please have the courtesy to change your RSVP so that people on the waiting list will have a chance to participate. If you are on the wait list and can't make it, please remove your name as well.

I am enthusiastic about photography and lovers of the City of Vancouver....however I am not qualified to answer any technical questions you may have...there may be more skilled members participating on the walk to answer your questions...if not Barry has kindly offered to answer any questions by email.

AT ALL TIMES, PLEASE BE MINDFUL OF YOURSELF AND YOUR FELLOW PHOTO WALKERS, YOUR PROPERTY AND YOUR SURROUNDINGS!

AFTER THE MEET-UP DON'T FORGET TO UPLOAD UP TO EIGHT OF YOUR BEST IMAGES.

Look forward to seeing you!

First meet up with this group, first time at this event and a new camera. I think I had better start learning how to use it in the light. Next time I will post some pictures. :0)

Heads up everyone! I'm not sure if I will be there on time - or at all. I'm sitting with a friend in emerg in Burnaby. Not sure how long we will be here, but if I'm out by 7:30 latest I will head over.

Will be coming from the cemetery to this event once it's dark. Where can I find the group or can someone send me a number to call to locate you? Thank you.

    October 26, 2013

    • Jan

Hi Simon, this event isn't one where you are going to be able to meet up with members. it's pretty much an "on your own" type of event with the hope that some people will be able to connect.

      October 26, 2013

  • Candy

    Just got it! Thanks Jan!

FYI...If anyone is still on the fence about which event to attend:

The All Souls event is not a costume event like Parade of Lost Souls. Although some people certainly will arrive in costume thinking it is that kind of event. It is the alternative to Parade of Lost Souls. The event is about remembering and honouring the deceased and tied to the more contemplative aspects surrounding the All Saints, All Souls and Day of the Dead traditions in cultures around the world.

Sorry I can't make it after all, Jan -- this sounds like SUCH a fun event!! But I leave for South America next week and just have far too much to do before then... shall share my adventure photos with you upon my return in mid-December! Happy snapping, folks!!

    October 23, 2013

    • Jan

Ahh Rats! I was so looking forward to hooking up. Let me know when you get home and we'll try and connect for coffee and a catch up. Love to hear all about SA! Safe trip Beck!

I will go to the event. I hope that I will find the group.

You don't have to wear a costume if you don't want to. This is a family event so everyone is welcome. The intent of the event is NOT to scare people, but to celebrate All Souls Night. Just a bit more lively than being at the cemetery for essentially the same thing.

    October 23, 2013

  • Mai S

Hi! This is my first time to attend meeting up event. I'll bring my camera but should I wear costumes?

Do we have to wear a costume to attend?

    October 21, 2013

  • Brigitte

Since there are 2 walks the same evening, I'm going to have to cancel on this one in order to attend the other. I look forward to seeing everyone's photos. Have fun :)

    October 9, 2013

  • Jeanette

Oh no ! Thank you for your email Jan, it has made me notice the date change and sadly I have to cancel. Have an amazing time, I look forward to seeing the photos.

    October 9, 2013

  • Jan

So just a reminder to those on the attending list. The actual location of the event will not be made public until NOON on the 26th. So you need to be tuning into this meetup page or checking out Public Dreams webpage for more information.

If you are currently down for attending both this event AND the cemetery All Souls event (which are now on the same date and approximate time) you need to change your RSVP to one or the other. Even though this event has no limit of attendees it's not fair to Kelly or I if you don't take the time to change your RSVP to one event or the other. So please take the time to make a decision - if you have to!

With a crowd this large - assuming it will stay this large - I will most likely just inform you of where the walk starts and you can get there on your own time. We won't try and "meetup" beforehand.

Bummer, NO I can't make it, as going to the APAC. Can one go on another date?

    October 7, 2013

    • Jan

Hi Irene, no it's one night only. I will change your RSVP to a No and remove you from the list.

      October 8, 2013

  • John M.

The change in date doesn't work for me.

    October 7, 2013

  • Kelly

I was really looking forward to this, but now that we have 2 photo-walks on SATURDAY OCTOBER 26 I can't attend...Jan will run this one and I'll do the cemetery.....Many of you are signed up to both, please make your choice and change your RSVP to no on the event you won't attend...Jan and I would really appreciate it!

No, I know I cannot make this one, but I might offer a comment; 75+ members trying to assemble at that corner during afternoonTranslink pedestrian rush hour seems a bit troubling.
I'd suggest a half block North on the West side of Commercial has a lot more room, way less foot traffic and quieter for the discussion of the evening plan.
I've assembled there a number of times on a midday weekend and that was a bit messy already. I think it worthwhile checking this option out, Kelly... Even if only via Google Earth!
Either way, have a fun night!

How do I add a 'plus one' to the RSVP?

    October 3, 2013

    • Kelly

Hi Brigitte....since there is no limit to the amount of attendees on this particular walk, it doesn't much matter, feel free to bring a guest, however if your guest wants to post photos, they must join and sign up themselves

Hey Jan, I never even noticed the start time for this. I won't even get home till 4:30pm. I won't be able to make it.

    • Jan

Hi Aaron....ah that's too bad. If I knew where we were going for sure you could just catch up. Hope to see you at another walk. I enjoyed our chat when in New West.

sorry to ask but is this an area safe to walk around after dark? And since you mentioned some folks from an organized society will be giving us directions and lead the group? I am new in town and would not want to get lost and spooked... O_o..

    September 23, 2013

    • Julia

I've never had a problem walking around this area after dark, and this is a very popular event, so there will be tons of people around :-)

Hi Sheila, no you don't have to, but that is part of the fun.
