- Sketch Cathedral Square @ Lunch
Cathedral Square is a lovely location to sketch with benches, trees, reflection pond and fountain, and kitty-corner to the picturesque Holy Rosary Cathedral. It's happening rain or shine, so bring sunscreen, hats, or umbrellas and of course your sketching supplies. As usual, parking is at a premium and very expensive so I encourage my fellow sketchers to take transit. Cathedral Square is conveniently located near Stadium Skytrain Station. This is the link to Translink Trip Planner: https://tripplanning.translink.ca/ This event is part of the promotion of public places by the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association, so we will be doing our part!
- Let's Sketch Around Canada Place
Downtown. Gastown. The waterfront. So much to draw. It'll be difficult to choose your subject. Tons of people if there are cruise ships in. We'll start out in front of Canada Place but it's just a few minutes into the cobblestone streets of Gastown to the east or the seaplane terminal and Convention Centre to the west. We'll meet across the street from Canada Place, west of the Fairmont Waterfront, next to the food fair sign. The forecast has some showers all week (yes, it's the middle of July) but only the morning for Sunday. Still, if it's wet, the food fair is downstairs. We'll meet up there anyways after two hours of sketching. Pack for sun or rain, hot or cool. Welcome to Vancouver sketching!
- Sketch @ Brockhouse Summer Fair
Let's sketch at Brockhouse Summer Fair located in and on the grounds of historic Brockhouse located at 3875 Point Grey Road, right next to Jericho Beach. Admission is free and there will be items for sale, food, beverages, and all the amenities in a picturesque old mansion on English Bay. Parking will be at a premium and probably expensive, so it is advisable to take the 4 UBC bus, get off at Wallace Street, walk further on 300 feet and turn north along the edge of Jericho Park towards the ocean where you will see Brockhouse right next to the Jericho Concession stand. We will meet at the entrance to Brockhouse at 10am. This event is rain or shine so bring sunscreen, sunhats or umbrellas, and of course, your sketching supplies.
- Weekday sketching session at Cathedral Square
This is a meetup to participate in "Art Tuesdays" in the summer, an initiative of the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association. We'll be sketching in the "Cathedral Square" park shown above (northeast corner of Dunsmuir and Richards). I will bring some extra pencils and papers in case passersby would like to join us. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary is right across the street. There will be some tables set up that we can use, and there are permanent benches as well. Lots of great food nearby too, such as falafel, poke, sushi, and ramen shops.
- Annual UBC Sketch Dash
I think it's annual. ? Anyways, Five secret locations on campus in 2 1/2 hours, so about half an hour in each place. This year, there's less walking between locations, just a minute or two. Still, leave the easel and big box of paints at home. We'll be on the move. We'll meet at the front of the UBC Bookstore. That will be location one (no longer secret) so you can get a head start or try your hand at the corn hole game. It's just across from the bus loop for the #4 or #14 if you're coming from downtown. The bigger loop for buses like the 99, 25, 41 is a little further with some construction in between. From 1. the Bookstore, we'll be going on to 2. perspective for days 3. old vs new 4. icons 5. how pretty! We'll finally take a breath and share our work at the very end. The current forecast says morning showers so hopefully we'll be in the clear. Most of these areas have cover or we can find an alternative. Saturday, so some buildings will be open for washrooms, a few restaurants will be working too. Might actually be quite busy with summer programs running.
- Let's Sketch Around Vanier Park & Kits Point
Haven't been here in awhile. A bit out of the way but always worth it for the views of the West End and English Bay. Lots of cool structures around too, like the Space Centre, Burrard Bridge and the Maritime Museum. A bit of a walk from the 4th Avenue buses 4,7, 84. A little better if you can ride a #2 on Cornwall from downtown. Lots of food and drink along Cornwall for after; washrooms available in the Space Centre/Vancouver Museum closer. The weather forecast says it will be "pleasant". Maybe go to the beach and catch a Ray.
- Let's Sketch Around Vanier Park & Kits Point
Yes, you are seeing double. This is a duplicate of an existing event. Just a way of making the announcement again instead of trying to message people individually. Many people have said they didn't get the first announcement. Meetup is checking into it. Kits Point - out of the way but always worth it for the views of the West End and English Bay. Lots of cool structures around too, like the Space Centre, Burrard Bridge and the Maritime Museum. Meeting in front of the fountain at the Space Centre at 1pm. Sketching for a couple hours and meeting back up again to share our work. A bit of a walk from the 4th Avenue buses 4,7, 84. A little better if you can ride a #2 on Cornwall from downtown. Lots of food and drink along Cornwall for after; washrooms available in the Space Centre/Vancouver Museum closer.

The current show is Alberto Giacometti, sculptures, drawings and lithographs. You can go to the show or draw outside, or do both, lots to draw in the heart of the city. Meet inside the 750 Hornby Street entrance at 12 noon, say hello, go draw for 2 hours and come back to the start and share our experiences. There is no charge to enter the building. If you go to the show it is adult $24 adult, $20 seniors 65+, $18 student with id. Lets go for coffee after our 2pm meeting. Everyone welcome, especially newcomers. No instruction, demos or lectures. Bring your own art supplies. The weather forecast now is cloudy so hope for sun. You can look for my snazzy new BlueJays baseball cap. Snazzy! Elegant in manner of dress! You could look it up. Here is some info on Alberto - https://www.fondation-giacometti.fr/en/biography PS M idori has let us know the Vancouver Jazz Festival will be active around the gallery. More to draw.
- Let's Sketch around Strathcona a second time
We all agreed after sketching here just a few weeks ago in May, that we could easily come back again .... so let's do it! The trendy area just south of Chinatown has a bunch of little stores along Union Street across from the viaduct, coffee shops and lots of heritage homes and buildings. The photo shows the corner of Union and Gore Streets. More homes like this further east, interesting buildings like Finch's Market on Jackson and Georgia. Also on the corner of Union and Gore is the Hunnybee Brunchonette where we met last time. We'll start off here and hopefully meet for coffee after. https://www.instagram.com/hunnybeebrunch/ Hopefully the weather will be good. - fingers crossed.
- Sketching at Olympic Village
The last time we were here was February and we all wound up inside. Now it's June! Almost summer. The Olympic Village area has plenty to draw. Besides the giant birds, there's interesting architecture, Science World, False Creek, views of downtown, and the Habitat Island sanctuary. Bonus points if you can find the beaver that lives in the pond. It's a short walk from the Science World/ Main Street Skytrain station, buses along Main and less frequently on 2nd. Not that far from Olympic Village station on the Canada Line on Cambie either. We'll meet at the benches outside Tap & Barrel pub nearer the seawall. If it's raining, we can meet inside the Community Centre. Same spots for getting back together after sketching for two hours. So far, the forecast is cloudy but not too cool. Let's hope we can stay outside for this one. Coffee after though?
