Is working for yourself as a contractor the right career decision for you? In this talk, we’ll discuss the pros and cons of starting your own business as a UX consultant.

From the outside, it can seem ideal to have more control over your hours, contracts and work life. It can also seem intimidating to walk away from the stability of a full-time job and into the sometimes chaotic world of contracting.

Together your presenters Anthony and Chris have over 30 years of UX consulting experience and will pass along tips and tricks that we have learned over the years on: the different types of contracting gigs, how to get your first contracts, how you can improve your skills and marketability as a contractor and how to maintain as a contractor over the long term.

The third member of the presentation team, Colleen (who regularly hires contractors for Apply Digital) will give the employer’s perspective on what employers are looking for when hiring superstar UX contractors.

This session is for anyone in a UX/UI or related role who are interested in becoming a contractor or who wants to improve as a contractor.

Chris Masterton

A leading UX strategist and designer with 21 years of experience designing cutting-edge user interfaces for websites, desktop and mobile applications.

Chris has produced engaging and easy-to-use interfaces for more than 80 projects including complex websites for clients such as IBM and Honeywell; interactive sites for Yahoo, Electronic Arts, and Microsoft; and mobile interface design for Lululemon, Motorola and the NBA.

For 12 years, Chris taught User Interface Design in the University of British Columbia's software engineering continuing studies program.

Anthony Hempell

Anthony is one of Vancouver's most experienced and respected leaders in UX and interaction design, with more than 20 years of experience of problem solving, design, and leadership.

In 2015 he founded Antenna Consulting, which is based on an innovative business model that fosters community and professional excellence among its consultants, while offering top quality service to clients.

Previous to Antenna, he worked with a diverse array of clients, including TELUS, BC Hydro, DirectTV, Starbucks, and Best Buy, while at Blast Radius, UX Guys, and other leading Vancouver agencies.

An active member of the Vancouver UX community, Anthony is a board member and organizer for the Vancouver UX Awards Society, and is currently mentoring at Microsoft Canada’s Garage internship.

Colleen has been a human resources professional for over 15 years and has spent the last 10 years working at agencies. Most recently, Colleen has been helping build a high growth digital product studio, Apply Digital, running the human resources and recruiting functions. She regularly hires freelancers and has been a freelancer herself.
