Animal Advisory Committee Meeting (ban use of painful devices on circus animals)

Many of you already know about the effort, and have even signed the petition, to get the Austin City Council to ban the use of painful devices (bullhooks, etc.) that circuses (like Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey) use on animals when they come to Austin. At the February meeting of the Animal Advisory Commission this Wednesday (February 13th at 6pm), Action for Animals Austin is asking the Commission to recommend to the City Council that they enact this ban.

In order to convince them to make this recommendation, they need AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE to come to the meeting itself and show support. This is one of those meetings where they need lots of people to attend in order to show the AAC that there is community support for banning these cruel devices. Just come and stand with the group, or if you want to hold a sign, or sign up to speak directly to the Commission, that's even better. If you decide to speak, please have prepared remarks. Those that sign up to speak, will have 3 minutes.

IF EVER THERE WAS A TIME WHERE MAXIMUM PARTICIPATION WAS NEEDED, THIS IS IT. If this is a cause you can support, please consider taking the time to attend the meeting. If this does not describe you, then there is no pressure and no judgment.

Thank you very much in advance!

The following information came from the Action for Animals Facebook event page:

"The Action for Animals leader will be speaking for 3 minutes. If you like, you may also sign up to speak on the same topic before the meeting starts. The AAC will discuss the topic after he speaks but will take no comments from the public while they are speaking about this issue. That's the law.

The Commission will either vote yes or no to recommend to the city council to ban painful devices used on animals in Austin. The Commission may decide to schedule a public hearing but AfAA is not asking them to do that since they failed to come to a consensus on this last year.

There is plenty of parking at the Austin Animal Center where this meeting is taking place. Please arrive 15 minutes early to find your seat."

Unable to attend on this evening, otherwise I would be there. Hope a lot of folks are able to go & follow through. This is such an important issue. For a "progressive" city, we really should try to make a difference!
