  • Brunch at Mother's AND Ethical Eating Talk at 1st U.U. Church
So this is a two-part meet up and all of you are welcome to do the first, or the second, or both. There's a talk on "Ethical Eating Choices" at the First Universalist Unitarian Church at noon, but before that some of us will be meeting for brunch at Mother's Cafe. The two places are less than two miles apart. Make sure you read all the details below: At 10am, Mother's Cafe opens for brunch, so if you'd like to join us there before the talk, you'll definitely want to be there at 10am (or earlier) since brunch is very popular. It's not likely we'll all be able to sit together so be prepared to be flexible. This part of the meetup will be rather unorganized. Then at about 11:45 we'll leave for the First Universalist Unitarian Church (4700 Grover Ave) for the talk, which starts at 12:00 noon and will last for about an hour or so. The speaker is Carol Whitaker, the Ethical Choices Program's Field Educator for Austin, who will speak on "Healthful Eating: Ethical Choices", and how obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and other diseases are life-style related. She will discuss the connection between diet and health and describe ways that informed dietary choices can help prevent or relieve diseases. The Ethical Choices Program seeks to inform individuals, especially students, of the importance of being informed and understanding the power and influence they have to make the world a better place through food choices. The program helpS individuals make thoughtful and responsible plant-based food choices that benefit their health, the planet, and other living creatures. Ms. Whitaker 's love of the natural world, years of community service to help environmental causes and her personal health struggles led her to uncover the connections between human health, the environment, and animal ethics.

  • Vegan Oil-Free Buffet at Aster's Ethiopian
    • What we'll do Aster's Ethiopian has been a big supporter of the AVVA in the past, and now they're doing something super awesome: a vegan oil-free night. They are normally closed on Mondays but thanks to ATX Alive, they will have the whole restaurant open for vegans who want to come for a really healthy version of their food. This will be an all-you-can eat buffet! All items on the buffet will be gluten free but the injera. You can have gluten free injera for an additional 2 dollars. Adults are $15, $17 with gluten-free injera and kids are half price. • What to bring • Important to know

  • The Last Pig - Screening at Alamo Drafthouse Mueller
PLEASE NOTE: RSVPing here does NOT count for admission. Tickets are $10, see the link below. For those of you not as interested in "pigskin" football as you are in saving pigs (and animals), the ATX Alive group has invited our members to join them for a special screening on Super Bowl Sunday*. Come join us to view a beautiful film that documents a farmer's personal journey, raising crucial questions about equality, the value of compassion and the sanctity of life. THE LAST PIG is a soul-bearing narrative that carries us through a pig farmer's awakening, the struggle to reinvent his life, and the ghosts that will haunt him forever. See the trailer at thelastpig.com. Make your Sunday truly Super! Tickets are $10/each (advance purchase only). There will be only 45 sold, they are available here: https://www.eventbrite.com/o/atx-alive-16503539726 *The screening actually finishes only a half-hour after kickoff, so you could still come see this AND make it to see the second-half comeback everyone's expecting. Or the halftime show. Or the really good commercials. Take your pick.

  • Vegan Thanksgiving Eve Dinner at Mr. Natural (Cesar Chavez)
PLEASE NOTE: This will be the only location for this meetup, we will NOT be meeting at Mr. Natural on South Lamar as well. Once again we'll be having our traditional meetup the night before Thanksgiving for Mr. Natural's vegan Thanksgiving Eve Dinner. They'll be serving their dinner at both locations all day, on Cesar Chavez and South Lamar, but this year we will ONLY be meeting in the evening at the Cesar Chavez location. The all-vegan menu is complete with their own homemade vegan "turkey" (not Tofurkey), vegan rosemary mushroom gravy, a fresh-baked roll and three vegetables of your choice, and a serving of their own orange-cranberry sauce. Check out their Thanksgiving menu at this link (https://mrnaturalblog.wordpress.com/2017/11/14/vegan-thanksgiving-eve-dinner/). The price of the individual plate this year is $16. It won't really be possible for our group to all sit together at one group of tables. We will be mixed in with the other diners, but we will have a greeter there to meet you and arrange as many people together at tables as possible. If being greeted isn't a concern, you may wish to come even earlier than our posted start time.

  • Gathering of the Tribes, Sept. 2017 - Austin's largest vegan potluck picnic!
It's BACK! It's been over a year since we had one of our big vegan potluck gatherings at Pease Park, but we're bringing back under the original name, Gathering of the Tribes. We've got TONS of new people in the Austin area who are vegans or vegetarians, and many new groups ("tribes") who weren't around when we did these before, so we're inviting all of them-- EVERYONE in the Austin veg community! Please bring a VEGAN dish to feed eight adults- no meat or animal products of any kind (dairy, egg, meat or chicken broths, honey, animal fats like lard, etc etc). Please be sure to bring a list of the ingredients, or the package that the food came in when you bought it, we want to note the ones that some of our fellow vegans need to avoid for dietary or allergic purposes. We need dishes in all these categories so we can have a nice balanced picnic with all kinds of dishes! • snacks/appetizers • soups/leafy salads • side dishes • main dishes • fruit dishes/desserts On the day of the gathering, please bring your own plate, utensils, and beverage (no glass)—and don't forget a serving utensil for your dish! Questions? Just post in the comments below!
