• Vegan Thanksgiving Eve Dinner at Mr. Natural (Cesar Chavez)

PLEASE NOTE: This will be the only location for this meetup, we will NOT be meeting at Mr. Natural on South Lamar as well. Once again we'll be having our traditional meetup the night before Thanksgiving for Mr. Natural's vegan Thanksgiving Eve Dinner. They'll be serving their dinner at both locations all day, on Cesar Chavez and South Lamar, but this year we will ONLY be meeting in the evening at the Cesar Chavez location. You don't have to come when we start at 6pm, but keep in mind that Mr. Natural closes at 8pm. The all-vegan menu is complete with their own homemade vegan "turkey" (not Tofurkey), vegan rosemary mushroom gravy, a fresh-baked roll and three vegetables of your choice. Check out their Thanksgiving menu at this link (https://www.mrnatural-austin.com/vegan-thanksgiving-menu). The price of the individual plate this year is $17, up a dollar from last year. We'll do our best for everyone in our group to sit together at a group of tables. There will be other diners, but we will try to arrange as many people together at tables as possible. If being greeted isn't a concern, you may wish to come even earlier than our posted start time.

  • Texas VegFest and Earth Day Austin JOIN FORCES

    Huston-Tillotson University

So last weekend, Texas VegFest was rained out for the first time EVER. However, they have made arrangements to bring their booths and vendors (maybe some food trucks too?) to the Earth Day Austin event at Huston-Tillotson University THIS Saturday, the 13th. Now, the ironic thing is that this Saturday is being called for "100% chance" of rain by KXAN, despite Friday being 0% and Sunday being 0%. Don't know what's up with that weather model. Hopefully Texas weather will prove to be typically Texas-y and the second attempt will go down without any issue. This is an UNHOSTED event; the AVVA will NOT have a booth this year. For schedules, activities, parking, and event details please visit the Earth Day site at earthdayaustin.com. See below for more info. "Tons of amazing activities and booths offered at Earth Day Austin! Join an anticipated 7,500+ attendees looking to learn as much as they can about saving the Earth (and ALL her inhabitants!) during the event. You'll find all of the exciting activities offered at Earth Day along with some fantastic vegan vendors, ALL FOR FREE! "Please join us this weekend for a fantastic day of education at Huston-Tillotson University, and in saying a special thanks to the Earth Day team for offering up space for us in their home!"

  • Dinner meetup at Counter Culture for February

    Counter Culture Vegan

PLEASE IGNORE PREVIOUS ANNOUNCEMENT FOR FEBRUARY 18. Hey everyone, restaurant meetups are BACK! We're starting up again, now that the weather is getting warmer, at Counter Culture! (PLEASE SEE IMPORTANT NOTE BELOW) Any and all are welcome for this dinner, just RSVP and come on out! So join us for a casual gathering, to meet each other and let us get to know you. This is a somewhat special event as our favorite server at Counter Culture, Abby, is going to be relocating to the west coast in April, so we wanted to have one more event with her before she left! If you're new to vegetarian or vegan eating, we can share resources and advice with you to help with any issues you're having. Counter Culture is one of Austin's premier vegan restaurants, so if you haven't been yet, this will be the perfect evening to try them. IMPORTANT NOTE: To make it easier for the wait staff to handle serving our large group, but still not make us have to put everyone's orders on a single bill, there will be a required gratuity of 20% for each person's tab. We appreciate your understanding.

  • Vegan Nom "Late Night" Opening Event

    Vegan Nom East

It's December, so why not have a meetup at a food trailer? Well this is going to be a pretty special one, so we had to put it on the calendar. For the first time ever, Vegan Nom, home of Austin's best tacos (vegan or otherwise), is expanding their hours and adding a dinner/late-night menu, so they're having a soft-launch event this Friday to usher it in. They put in a new lit patio just so they could have the longer hours. FREE BEER WHILE SUPPLIES LAST! They'll also be raffling off new Vegan Nom T-Shirts, and the first 50 customers enjoy free Planet Queso and chips! Going forward, their dinner menu hours will be Sunday-Thursday 6pm-11pm. Friday-Saturday 6pm-midnight. Closed Mondays. (Yes, they will still be open for breakfast and lunch with the tacos menu!)

  • Brunch at Mother's AND Ethical Eating Talk at 1st U.U. Church

    First Unitarian Universalist Church

So this is a two-part meet up and all of you are welcome to do the first, or the second, or both. There's a talk on "Ethical Eating Choices" at the First Universalist Unitarian Church at noon, but before that some of us will be meeting for brunch at Mother's Cafe. The two places are less than two miles apart. Make sure you read all the details below: At 10am, Mother's Cafe opens for brunch, so if you'd like to join us there before the talk, you'll definitely want to be there at 10am (or earlier) since brunch is very popular. It's not likely we'll all be able to sit together so be prepared to be flexible. This part of the meetup will be rather unorganized. Then at about 11:45 we'll leave for the First Universalist Unitarian Church (4700 Grover Ave) for the talk, which starts at 12:00 noon and will last for about an hour or so. The speaker is Carol Whitaker, the Ethical Choices Program's Field Educator for Austin, who will speak on "Healthful Eating: Ethical Choices", and how obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and other diseases are life-style related. She will discuss the connection between diet and health and describe ways that informed dietary choices can help prevent or relieve diseases. The Ethical Choices Program seeks to inform individuals, especially students, of the importance of being informed and understanding the power and influence they have to make the world a better place through food choices. The program helpS individuals make thoughtful and responsible plant-based food choices that benefit their health, the planet, and other living creatures. Ms. Whitaker 's love of the natural world, years of community service to help environmental causes and her personal health struggles led her to uncover the connections between human health, the environment, and animal ethics.
