Vegan Dinner at Kabul

This event is now full. If you would like to join the waiting list send me an mail.

Please include your phone number so I can contact you quickly if there's a cancellation. Signing up for the waiting list does not commit you to going if space becomes available. There is no fee involved in joining the waiting list.

If you are interested in this event it's important to add your name to the waiting list even if you think it's unlikely you'll be contacted to go:
1) There could be last-minute cancellations and the people ahead of you on the list might not be able to go -- or I might not be able to get ahold of them.
2) It gives me a better indication of the interest level, which can help in planning future events.

For those who are new to Madison, Kabul Restaurant has been a fixture on State Street for over 30 years. They serve delicious Afghani and Mediterranean food and they are hosting us for a completely vegan dinner...

Fried potato and scallion-filled pastries served with cilantro chutney.

Steamed chick peas blended with tahini, lemon, and herbs, and sprinkled with sumac. (Gluten free)

Dinner Salad
House salad with vegan dressing. (Gluten free)

Green beans cooked with onions, tomatoes, yellow split peas, and a blend of special seasonings. (Gluten free)

Tunisian Spinach Stew
Fresh spinach cooked with a roasted blend of spices, potatoes, and carrots. (Gluten free)

Okra Korma
Sliced okra sauteed with caramelized onions, ginger, garlic, cumin, turmeric, and garam masala. (Gluten free)

Baklava with Fruit (no honey)

Water will be served with the meal. Other beverages will be available for an extra charge.

The $15.00 fee includes the tax, tip, and everything mentioned above (except the noted beverages). That breaks down to about $11.00 for the meal, plus tax, tip, and a little to cover the and PayPal fees. Kabul is giving our group a great deal. A meal like this would normally cost twice as much.

RSVP/Payment Info:
Pre-payment is required to RSVP (see exception below). automates this process when you pay via PayPal. If you want to pay by check, contact me and I will give you my mailing address. I will manually update your RSVP as soon as I receive your request, but since our events fill up quickly, out of fairness to other group members I will remove the RSVP if the check is not received within four business days.

Special honor system exception: If you have been in the group for a while and have a history of attending and paying for events without any problems you can contact me about paying me at the event. This accommodation is provided as a convenience -- you are still responsible for paying even if you do not attend.

Important Note: I will manually update the RSVPs of people who pay by check or use the honor system, but it's possible the event will fill up before I check my email. If that happens I will add you to the waiting list.

Fee Disclosure:
The $15.00 fee includes a little extra to cover PayPal's fees (74 cents) as well as's $144 annual cost.

Refund Policy:
If you cancel on or before Friday, April 1st you will get a full refund. There are no refunds for cancellations after the deadline or if you do not show up to the event. If something comes up at the last minute you are welcome to find someone else to attend instead of you. The reason refunds are not given after the deadline is that I agree to pay for everyone who has paid me at that point.

What about kids?
Kids are welcome, but pay full price. However, young children who will only nibble off of your plate can attend at no charge. Please note in the comment section of your RSVP if kids will be joining you.

This is a vegetarian group. Why is the dinner vegan?
This group has members who are vegetarian, vegan, and just interested. Everyone is welcome. I think it's important for our events to have a menu that not only has something for everyone, but where everyone can eat everything.

Thanks for the suggestion Jan. It would be great if I could confidently tell the group that certain items are always vegan. But that's not something I want people to rely on me for (especially since posted comments can quickly become outdated). If they aren't always vegan, dishes served at our meetups can usually be made vegan when ordered. For the dinner at Kabul, my understanding is that everything is normally vegan except the salad dressing and the baklava.

Good meetup. The restaurant may have been hot and crowded, but the food was deeelicious!

I think it would be very useful for us to know which dishes from a restaurant meetup are menu items that are default vegan... hopefully making it easier for us to return to the restaurant and know a few items we can order. Any chance you can tag that question on when you set up future restaurant meetups? Pretty please? :-) Were any of the items from Kabul menu items that are always vegan? Those potato things were SO good. :-)

Food was decent enough, though the sauce was served miserly in some plates and wait staff was unable to address it. Got to taste one of the dishes as the manager initially did not ask servers to communicate the 'shared' taste plan. Baklava was the best part, and also the smallest I have ever had. Overall - I won't be joining in for a meetup here another time though going in a smaller group might be worthwhile.

This was our first meetup and we had such a nice time. The food was excellent, as was the company.
