For-the-Animals Affinity Group

  • This location is shown only to members

  • This is a "non-meetup" where you can join the For-the-Animals Affinity Group. This is NOT an announcement of an actual event.

Are you vegan primarily for the animals?

Perhaps you think in terms of practicing non-violence or ahimsa in your daily life?

RSVP here if you'd enjoy meeting other members with similar ethical concerns and a desire to follow a more compassionate path.

transformed to virtually vegan definitely for the animals most of all. Also for Mother Earth as she cannot withstand the billions of animals bred & murdered for humans' unnecesary selfish palate. Wanted to let you know I've been reading Living Among Meat Eaters, and thank you for the suggestion. As for not participating in this group & meetups since joining, I have to apologize as my life is the most hellish it's ever been. I'm disabled & cannot afford the gas or money for any meetups. I'm in SW Suffolk and would like to know if anyone else here is close by. I could really use some fellow vegan/veggie support. My family (what little is left of it) is unsupportive in three major ways: I'm 50 & going through the change, I've been in a war with major depression/anxiety/major sleep deficit for more than 2 decades, and now I'm a vegan & they don't want to accept the awareness that would force them to reflect & change. Love to all you exceptionally caring souls! ~Margaret

Dearest Margaret -- you are a remarkable and noble person to be able to stay steadfast in your empathy and conviction for animals, despite what must be the overload of your own personal troubles. Many people use life's overloads as an excuse to not think or feel deeply about animals. So I respect you very much, and am also sending hugs. Email me if you want.

I like discussing ethics with people who are open-minded and rational.

I know what you mean, Beverly. Do you know the story of how cartoonist Dan Piraro went vegan? It's pretty awe-inspiring. He encountered information, couldn't deny the ethical obligation it presented, and went vegan. Just like that. But I haven't met many people who are like that. So often, people's choices are not based on what's logical or rational. It's often the case that people do what they do because of psychological factors, emotions, brain chemistry—and their choices may not seem very rational at all. This is particularly true when it comes to food. I once thought it would be enough to simply show someone the logical argument presented in Mylan Engel Jr.'s brilliant essay, The Immorality of Eating Meat (it's here:) and poof, they'd HAVE to go vegan! But I came to see it rarely works that way...

I am so happy that I have joined this group! I am such a passionate vegan and I have not run into many on Long Island, which makes me spend a lot of my time off of the island. But now that I see there are more people with compassionate minds, and selfless lifestyles, I'm looking forward to meeting some of you and spreading our beautiful way of life :)

Yes, I also do not buy leather or wool, or purchase anything that contains animal products.

Why are some animals our pets and others our dinner? How we can love some animals and just reject others. Species-ism is just wrong. But i bet i'm preaching to the choir. Most people wonder how do you live without meat, and i wonder how do you live knowing what cruelty and torture you condone, by sticking your head in the sand.
