Its very sad that the president isnt more concerned allowing GMO's into our food supply. He signed the bill with the Monsanto Proctection Act in it. I am very discouraged and disappointed in our leaders.

I share your concern. After reading the article below, I wonder if Obama is intentionally betraying Americans. I am outraged that soon there will be no way to halt the spread of GMO's.

On a more optimistic note, I just read the following statement by the Organic Consumers Association.

"Two days ago, President Obama signed into law the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2013, a measure that includes the outrageous “Farmers Assurance Provision,” better known as the “Monsanto Protection Act.” Under this new law, not even the federal courts will be able to stop Monsanto from introducing a slew of new, potentially poisonous GMO crops into our food supply, even if the USDA has determined that those crops may be hazardous to our health.

This recent and dangerous gift to the biotech industry makes it even more urgent that we pass GMO labeling laws sooner rather than later. And our next best opportunity to do that is in Washington State, where the campaign to pass I-522, a citizens initiative to label GMOs, is building steam."

Here's a worthwhile link on the subject:

Glad that this issue concerns you, too! For more, watch Patriotism on a Plate (a TED talk on YouTube).

Thank you, Hilly, for posting the link to this informative TED Talk on GE food. Its excellent explanation of the probable cause of the recent spike in food allergies was especially worthwhile, and I highly recommend it to other Vegan L.I. members.

"The tiny town of Sedgwick, Maine, has passed an ordinance that grants its residence full food sovereignty. In certain circles, this event is being hailed as a milestone, the first town of many that will pass similar similar ordinances. There will be an avalanche and the whole country, nay world, will be the better for this. The population of Sedgwick is a bit over a thousand, showing that grassroots endeavors can bring people together, but against this stunning victory, we have the wet ink of Obama's signature giving protection to Monsanto."

I too am(have been) much involved w'info, signing petitions, etc. on this subject and have been silent only because, having worked so hard for Obama's election AND reelection was APPALLED with latest info. Have sent comments to that extant to WH, and have read above items you both posted. I thought THIS was best thing I'd heard in a LONG time!

WE need to support our local farmers, I know CSA's still looking to fill their shares for the 2013 season here on LI, if you have not gone this route for Local Support of Organic Agriculture, I can not speak enough good things about my last 2 years with Golden Earthworm on the North Fork. Yes, Farmer's markets are gaining in popularity, and that is ALL GOOD, but the VALUE I get w'GE is far superior to anything at the F's M. In both Huntington and Massapequa they have 4 drop offs, with DOZENS of other places all over LI. GE provides you w'approx. double the amount of FRESH, ORGANIC produce I could get for the same $$$ at Fairway and/or WF and WaboutN. GE is the BEST CSA for one or two people, if your are a "family" and/or want to share a share w'friend check out Sophia's Farm in North Amityville. If you go to LocalHarvest.com and "click" CSA, then plug in your zip you'll get the whole list. At least on the GE website I know you can check out previous year's Newsletters to see what the box brought each week, though the list fails to describe how FRESH and BEAUTIFUL ( imagine a head of escarole too large for a plastic shopping bag)! I've gone on long enough, if you want more info feel free to email me. Eat Local!

Not that it will make anybody think there is a "good" side to all this, but.......and it does say at the end that it's not permanent, or at least that's my take of last sentence. Of course the issue is that once released into the environment, there is no "taking the GMOs back!!!

BTW, and FYI can't say how helpful these regular Snopes articles that I receive are, not more than one a week, and so full of checking out those ridiculous emails we all get, not to mention "squashing" all the "smear" champagnes on just about everything. Sign up, I guarantee you'll find the info helpful!

ALSO, almost as important, and like GMO, there is no going back. BUY ORGANIC! Things like the HUGE increase in Almond growth are very much linked w'this. T'Joe's has Organic Almond milk for same $ as reg. We vegans use lots of Almonds, PLEASE spend the extra $ wherever you shop for Organic. The more people who buy Organic the fewer farmers using these pesticides!!!

We MUST save the BEES!!!
