Stay in a Creepy Clown Motel and Visit Weird Nevada Roadside Attractions

  • Needs a location

  • I know this Meetup sounds crazy and super weird, but that's kind of the point! My idea is that we'll stay a night in this weird clown museum in Tonopah, Nevada.

    Watch this video to get an idea:

    Room rates are about $45 per room (rooms fit 3 people).

    Tonopah is three hours away from Las Vegas, but the good news is that there are a lot of fun stops along the way, including:

    * 3 Ghost towns
    * An outdoor sculpture museum
    * A "car forest" (painted cars sticking out of the sound like trees)
    * Part of a crashed airplane (it's fun to take pictures next to)

    There doesn't seem to be much to do in Tonopah, but there is this museum we could check out:

    In the evening, we can go to a saloon or a brewery.

    I figure we'll leave Saturday morning and come back on Sunday afternoon. We won't be on a tight schedule, however, so if you need to get back at a particular time on Sunday, please make sure to drive your own car.

    Wish I could put a maybe attend to this--Nevada ghost towns are my stomping grounds. Might swing by in the area as I'll be doing a Nevada ghost town road trip with a French journalist. Maybe I can coordinate a stay with the group for the night.

    I would really love to go to this meetup, sounds awesome!! I had to change my RSVP for the first date because I had to help my sister with my nephews~ I definitely don't want to miss this one. Hopefully my work schedule won't interfere

    Hey guys! Sorry to keep moving the date on this! I really want to go! But we need more sign ups!!! I'm hoping if I host a few more local day outings, people will meet us and see that we're cool people and not be afraid to sign up. :) Or maybe this is just a lame idea haha. Who knows. But I'm not ready to give up yet! :)

      I'd love to go and share some of the oddities along the way. Unfortunately I had a few other desert ghost town adventures of my own planned for the first day!

    Hi guys. I moved the date to November 5th so that more people can go. Sorry if this has caused any inconvenience. The reason being is that there are only 5 people signed up at the moment and my experience is (I've been hosting Meetups for 6 years) is that we tend to get a 50% no show rate. So if only 5 people signed up, then it's likely only two will show up for the event. That isn't enough to make the trip worth it...

      Hi Reannon, there are only 5 signed up now. Is this still a go?

      October 27

    • Reannon

      Hmmm. I don't want to have to keep rescheduling it. Let me email the people who are signed up and see if they're definitely going. If I can confirm that all five people are going then we can still do it

    Not sure I'll attend this, but this is a really cool place and Tonopah and the surrounding areas feature some positively beautiful places to explore. Eerie abandoned buildings, vast desert landscape, and some awesome small town vibes.

    Don't forget to stop in the shops and strike up some conversations with the locals--more often than not they'll walk you through some of the more hidden sights and give you a little more insight behind their communities. I just did a huge road trip hitting all the Nevada ghost towns for a travel blog and I can't wait to explore them even further.

    I think Tonopah is where I heard there was a date farm that had a walking trail on it or something like that. I'm not very good at explaining, but I know the person who told me about it made it sound like fun. :)

      I figured out that was actually Tecopah (probably spelled wrong). I so don't have a clue about anything out here. :P

    • Oksana P.

      Yes, there is a China date farm. It's a cute oasis place with a nice hike to get through. 😊

    That sounds so fun! What is the total cost of the trip? Are we reserving the hotel? Just so I have an estimate

    September 5

    • Reannon

      Yeah, I'll make a reservation once I get a more definite headcount. The hotel would be approximately 15 dollars per person...unless you want your own room, then it's be about 40 dollars. Not sure how much gas would be. It depends on how good your car is with gas. It's about a 3 hour drive...most of the roadside attractions we'd be visiting are free. So most of your costs would be food and alcohol....
