Oak Creek Canyon at Red Rock

Oak Creek is one of the creeks and canyons in Red Red Park. Enjoy the views of Wilson and Rainbow peaks while on this fun little hike! Trees and boulders in the canyon makes this an interesting and somewhat challenging hike. The hike will involve in part some climbing over big rocks (boulders) once we reach the creek. Nothing too extreme, enough though to expose you to this type of hiking activity and you should be comfortable with it if you sign up. We will go as deep as we can into the canyon.  Much of the trail itself leading to the upper creek is filled with rocks (see picture) so wear good hiking shoes. Being this time of the year, it should be warm and sunny so bring lots of liquids(at least 2L) and sun protection.

Hiking level 3/intermediate

Hiking time ~ 4 hrs *

Hiking distance ~ 6 miles

Danger level 2 of 5

Pace level 3 of 5

Elevation difference ~1,500ft

Scrambling level 2-3 of 5

* allow for additional time if we decide to go further bouldering up the canyon

Once we get to the boulders and if you slow down the group too much, you will be asked to turn back or stay behind.  Please,  know your limits.

Bring a hat, snack, sunglasses, at least 2L of water and apply sunscreen!

As always:

1. Bring enough water

2. Leave no trace behind

3. No trail cutting

4. Know your capabilities

5. Stay with the group

Do not go to the wrong pullout read below:

We meet up at the MARKED Oak Creek pullout.  Pullout means just that, you pull out the main road into the gravel/dirt parking area. It is ON Blue Diamond Rd (main road/Charleston to Red Rock, NOT IN THE SCENIC LOOP). You pass the Red Rock Park/Scenic Loop entrance, the Red Rock Overlook and you pass a few other pullouts and look for the small brown sign that says "OAK CREEK" and pull off the road. There's plenty room and you can pull out on either side of the road  Give yourself about 10 minutes to get there from Charleston and the 215 Beltway and 8.9 miles down the road. If you see the sign for "First Creek", you just passed the Oak Creek pullout. You can also approach the pullout from Blue Diamond Rd at the SW part of the valley. What's nice about meeting here is that there are no fees or crowds to deal with and carpooling is not necessary but is always a good idea.

Please don't be late.

Red Rock group limits won't allow more RSVP's so unless you make the YES list by Sunday morning, please DO NOT just show up or you will be asked to go home.
