Grand Staircase in Calico Basin

Statistics:

Distance: 3.5 miles

Elevation Gain: 1100 feet

Time: 2.5 hours maximum

Pace: Moderate

Difficulty: 3.5

Scrambling: Class 3 (Requires the use of both hands and feet)

Fear Factor: Medium if you're afraid of heights

Grand Staircase is a fun 1100 foot climb up the sandstone face of the Calico Hills overlooking Red Spring Picnic Area in Calico Basin. From the top, we'll enjoy beautiful views of both Red Rock Canyon and the Las Vegas valley. After relaxing at the summit we'll descend via a non-traditional backside route into Red Rock Canyon. Upon reaching the canyon floor we'll follow a trail which loops counter-clockwise around the base of the mountain and back to our cars.

The initial climb to the summit is VERY strenuous and requires the use of both hands and feet (class 3). Exposure will be minimal although serious injury is always a possibility. The descent involves a higher degree of exposure and danger. Nonetheless, beginners are welcome if you're relatively fit and don't have an overwhelming fear of heights.

You'll burn LOTS of calories on the way up so be sure to bring a liter of water and snacks. Gloves are helpful to help protect your hands but are not required. Several outhouses are available at the picnic area. Come join us for a fun morning with a slight element of danger. The temperature should be in the 60's for our Saturday morning hike with lots of sunshine. Be sure to dress in layers. Don't forget your hat and sunscreen.
