Around the back of the Grand Staircase is an area that doesn't get climbed much. It's easier to get stuck on cliffs. I've climbed it many times, but never developed a set route. This is the route that we'll take as we climb to the top and return down a different path that features part of the "Calico Underground" and Tish Slot.
This hike is similar to the Grand Staircase in elevation gain, but might require a bit more technique in some spots. If you've done the Grand Staircase, then you can do this one. Coming down, however, is a bit more difficult. There are a few places that provide a technical challenge and a little bit of exposure.
The view from the top of this rock is amazing. There's a pretty good view of the entire Calico Basin and the surrounding rocks as well as a look into the city to remind you that you're not very far away. You can also see over the 13-mile loop into the signature part of Red Rock Canyon.
This hike is a Blue Tier/Tier 3 hike on my Scrambling Tiers (https://db.tt/Rvl3HQkF) list.
Not for beginners or those afraid of heights or tight spaces. There are a few places that require intermediate scrambling skills and there is some exposure. You must be able to pull your body weight up and lower yourself down using your arms. See the list of pre-requisite hikes below to determine if you are up to this hike.
If I don't know you or if I can't determine your scrambling experience from your profile, then be prepared to detail your scrambling experience. Details means a description of the climbing you've done and the people you did it with.
No guests will be allowed without my prior approval.
The search for Disco Dan: Keep an eye out for Disco Dan on this hike. He has been lurking here for a couple of years. Anybody who spots him will get an early RSVP on any of my hikes.
YOU MUST BE ON THE "GOING" LIST IN ORDER TO GO ON THIS HIKE. CRASHING WILL NOT BE ALLOWED.
We'll meet at the Red Springs Parking Lot in Calico Basin. To get there, just head west on Charleston towards the park and make a right turn onto the well-marked Calico Basin turnoff. It's 2 miles BEFORE the Park entrance. Follow the road down to the Red Springs parking lot.
