Black Mountain- Anthem

Black Mountain Anthem (in Henderson) offers incredible views of the entire Las Vegas valley and beyond. We'll pass what appear to be volcanic rock formations as we work our way to the top. Unlike most mountain peaks in the area, there is a trail the entire way to the summit. Our route will be 6 miles up and back with 2100 feet of elevation gain. It starts out gradually and becomes steeper as we enter the saddle. The final ascent is very steep and requires lots of endurance. We'll spend about 15 minutes or so at the summit to enjoy the beautiful panorama. It's easy to slide on the way down so trekking poles may come in handy, however, most hikers have no problem without them. It will take us 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the top and another 1.5 hours to make it back down. Count on brilliant sunshine so be sure to bring a hat, sunscreen, snacks and adequate water. Three liters minimum is recommended. You'll burn a LOT of calories on the way up. Beginners are welcome. Don't worry if you can't make it all the way to the peak. There are plenty of places to stop along the way and still enjoy awesome views. Since this is an "up and back" trail, we'll catch you on the way down if you only make it part of the way. Come join us for a fun hike! Everyone should have a great time regardless of your abilities but an intense physical workout is guaranteed. For those desiring, we'll probably meet for lunch after our hike. I'm not familiar with the restaurants in Henderson so we'll take a vote afterward as to where we want to go. To get to the trailhead:
Go south on Eastern Avenue from the 215. Keep heading south several miles until Anthem Parkway branches off to the left from Eastern Avenue. Follow Anthem Parkway until you see a Walgreen's on your right-hand side at the intersection of Anthem Parkway and Hampton. Turn left at the first street past the Walgreen's which is called Atchley Drive. There is not a street sign on the left but there should be one on the right. Atchley Drive turns into Somersworth. Follow Atchley/Somersworth a very short distance and turn left at the first street which is called Shadow Canyon Drive. Follow Shadow Canyon Drive as it curves around until you see a small parking lot on your left. There are only a few parking spaces so most of us will have to park in the street. If you miss the parking area and hit Atchley/Somersworth again you've gone a few hundred feet too far.

I liked this hike, but ended up going by myself b/c I got lost on trying to find the trail head. Dang Mapquest!

Good idea Sondra! The neighbors may appreciate not having 50 cars parked in the street.

Last time I did this we carpooled from the Walgreens, any takers? Might be a good idea with the parking situation.
