• Memorial Day Backpacking or Car Camp - Saw Trip Big Sur Trail

    Memorial Day weekend three night backpacking trail work SAW TRIP. OPTIONAL two night trip - hike in Saturday morning. OPTIONAL two night car camp at Cold Spring Camp. All participants must leave at the same time on Monday. A group of us will hike in to Rainbow Camp Friday. A second group will meet Saturday morning. The second group has an option to "car camp" at Cold Spring Camp, a half mile from the cars. If you have not made arrangements to hike down to Rainbow Camp, the Saturday group will camp at Cold Spring. The focus of the Rainbow Group will be sawing fallen trees. But there will be plenty of brushing also. The focus of the Cold Spring Group will be brushing within 1+ miles from the camp. Both great options! This is an opportunity to see remote areas of the South Fork of the Big Sur River. Much of this area burned in the Soberanes Fire in 2016, but some beautiful unspoiled areas remain. We hope to see wildflowers at the high elevations. MEET: Friday morning 8 AM at Big Sur Station. Don't be late! Optional Saturday morning 8 AM at Big Sur Station. Don't be late! BE ADVISED THAT THIS IS A STRENUOUS TRIP WITH A LONG CLIMB AT THE END OF THE LAST DAY. Hike 5.5 miles from the trailhead to Rainbow Camp. We will clear any fallen trees on the way to Rainbow Camp. Then work to clear trees on the South Fork Trail. Then work on the Big Sur Trail where additional large trees are blocking the trail. Car Camp option at Cold Spring Camp: HIKE .5 miles from the parking location to Cold Spring Camp. This is a spacious, open area at the start of the Big Sur Trail. There is water, a view all the way to the ocean, and space to have a campfire. WHAT TO BRING: In addition to bringing essential items of personal gear and food for the duration of the trip, please also include: • Work gloves, sturdy work clothes, protective eyewear, and sturdy shoes or boots • Day pack able to carry 3 liters of water • Extra food and snacks for the trail • Tecnu lotion for poison oak if you need it • Your favorite loppers and handsaw if you have them, otherwise these tools will be provided • Hard hat if you have one • Safety instruction will be provided • Don’t forget to bring a special contribution to the famous, festive and fabulous VWA hors d’oeurves POTLUCK. This is the first night of any trip but often spills over to other nights. VWA TRAIL CREW LEADER: Betsy MacGowan OVERVIEW: CAR CAMPING TRIP HIKE 1 mile from the trailhead WORK on the Terrace Creek Trail from the North Coast Ridge Road. EASY HIKE TO THE WORK! We have received permission to work on this closed trail. However, all participants must be approved in advance. HIKE 1 mile from the trailhead WORK on clearing brush from the Terrace Creek Trail starting from the trailhead on the North Coast Ridge Road. This Trail is closed to the public. Our work will be the first step to reopening both the Terrace Creek Trail and eventually the Pine Ridge Trail. We need your help! However, this trip is limited to participants who have been on trips before. The leader MUST be able to vouch for you before you can participate. That being said, we need all the help we can get to clear this trail. This will be a good introduction to backpacking and trailwork. Plus a chance to learn how to use a crosscut saw. Work on the Terrace Creek Trail. There is water along the trail and at our camp location. MEET: Big Sur Multi Agency Facility 8 A.M. DON'T BE LATE! IMPORTANT: Meetup directions may not be the best. In you mapping program, search for: Big Sur Station, 47555 CA-1, Big Sur, CA 93920 The Big Sur Multi Agency Facility is at Big Sur Station. It is on the east (inland) side of Highway One, about a half mile south of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. For those coming from the north, after you pass Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, you cross the Big Sur River on an inconspicuous bridge. Then as you start the uphill, there is a left turn lane; use this left turn lane to turn in to the Multi Agency Facility at Big Sur Station. If you go over a larger bridge, and get to the Big Sur Bakery, you have gone too far. Tecnu lotion for poison oak protection if you need it. There is LOTS of poison oak on this trail.
