Secure a Ubuntu server

This meet up will be hands on presentation on how to secure a Linux Ubuntu Server. Then we will go further down the rabbit hole attacking vmware images. Members can bring multiple images and learn how to protect them. This will cover many topics such as hardening, patching, event logs, and firewall rules. This presentation will concentrate on defensive techniques and lead to an understanding on how to protect linux servers. Then we will learn how to attack and defend on your own or as part of a team.  Feel free to email the organizer or co-organizer with topics or ideas you would like to see.

Team members are encouraged to bring their own vmware images hardened or vulnerable. The more images the better. Do not bring LIVE servers only bring images you can mess with. For the lecture senior members can create their own Ubuntu server images to speed up the process. The presentation is based on a windows host using virtual box and 2 ubuntu server images. What you will need for sure is one stock default LAMP server running DNS (target). * Do not update the target server *. You will also need one Open SSH server (attacker) Feel free to update the attacker image with whatever you want . You can configure your own LAMP server and configure your own Hacker Blackhat attack image and bring your own tools. You can use vmware or virtual box if you bring your own images. I will send another email for the server names. If the server names are wrong then it will be longer to complete the exercises.I encourage you to email me and ask questions before saturday.

For the people who don’t bring their own servers we will be using 2 ubuntu server images already created. The images are running the Gnome Unity desktop with colored backgrounds The pre-req for this lecture will be about 20GB free space and running virtualBOX with 3gb free ram. I have created the images with .VDI so the typical VMWARE server will not work. virtualBOX is free online. The images were created with a windows host for the bare metal. If you don't have a workstation other members will be bringing their laptops and we may have to share. I will also be bringing a hard drive with the images on board. It will save time if members could get the image before Saturday. Any questions feel free to email me.

Note: Would be good to bring a pad of paper and pen also.

We may be getting some pizza or heading down to the yates street tap house after the presentation. Let me know if you have any ideas.

The meetup will start at serious coffee where members will meet and great. At 10:00 the meetup will move to another location at 10:30. It would be a good idea to bring a small snack or lunch just in case. The estimated time for this lecture is around 4 hours.
