Paddling to Discovery on a day with significant currents

  • Jun 9, 2013 · 10:00 AM

Warm sunny weather will be our friend this coming Sunday as we take on the crossing to Discovery Island on a day with significant currents. Paddling together we will cross to Discovery at more or less slack tide. It's never totally slack on a day with an 8 ft tidal exchange as the water is always moving somewhere on the crossing. We'll head to Rudlin Bay for another of our famous pot luck lunches and then gather the energy to circle Discovery and return to Oak Bay with the tide running pretty good. This an intermediate level paddle open to all who can do a wet exit and reentry, have a good solid forward stroke and have immersion gear, wetsuit or drysuit.

The forecast was for strong winds and significant currents. We encountered moderate winds and strong currents which were sometimes with us often against us as we made our way out from Oak Bay through the chain islets and then through the gap between Chatham and Discovery before stopping at Rudlin Bay and then returning home rounding Discovery in a clockwise manner. In particular, winds and currents were against us the whole way home and made for an enduring paddle. It was beautiful, breezy and a perfect day to take up the challenge of getting out and around Discovery on a day when currents and the wind forecast could have dealt us an even more difficult hand. Kudos to Guy and Al for giving it their best effort when it seemed at times that they were making little forward progress.

Hi Mike, Glad to hear you are interested in getting out. You know the paddle to Discovery has a thousand faces. This weekend it won't look anything like last weekend when there was almost no tidal exchange. We'll have an 8+ feet tidal exchange this time around.

Sounds like a great day to practice current technique - I'll be out of the country until the last part of June so will unfortunately miss this outing. Have fun and see you soon !
