Willows Beach/north end
On May[masked] we will come together as a paddling community to demonstrate our opposition to expanding oil tanker traffic on the coast and our commitment to protect and defend our beloved, sacred and beautiful marine environment.
The Discovery Challenge is an invitation to sea kayakers, outrigger canoeists, first nations paddlers and others to join us for this first annual (I hope) 13.5 km race around Discovery Island.
Some of us might not yet be aware but the proposed twinning of the kinder morgan line into Vancouver will triple the oil tanker traffic going RIGHT BY DISCOVERY ISLAND. google kinder morgan twinning for abundant info. Of course our concerns about expanding pipelines and tanker traffic include our opposition to Enbridge Northern Gateway, a pipeline that will cross approx 700 streams and rivers on it's way to the port of Kitimat.
There will be a number of race categories...
sea kayakers (men, women, senior men and senior women (over 55)
OC4s or 8s perhaps mixed
First Nations canoes....
There will be speakers and a community feast on the beach after the race.
There is much work to be done in order to make this a successful event and so I am canvassing our meetup group to see who is interested in lending a hand with organizing and promoting the Discovery Challenge.
BTW there will be a shorter course for those less athletic folk who want to come out and show their support but might find the 13.5 km course a little too long.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
