Paddlers against Pipelines/The Discovery Challenge

  • May 19, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • Willows Beach/north end

On May[masked] we will come together as a paddling community to demonstrate our opposition to expanding oil tanker traffic on the coast and our commitment to protect and defend our beloved, sacred and beautiful marine environment.

The Discovery Challenge is an invitation to sea kayakers, outrigger canoeists, first nations paddlers and others to join us for this first annual (I hope) 13.5 km race around Discovery Island.

Some of us might not yet be aware but the proposed twinning of the kinder morgan line into Vancouver will triple the oil tanker traffic going RIGHT BY DISCOVERY ISLAND. google kinder morgan twinning for abundant info. Of course our concerns about expanding pipelines and tanker traffic include our opposition to Enbridge Northern Gateway, a pipeline that will cross approx 700 streams and rivers on it's way to the port of Kitimat.

There will be a number of race categories...

sea kayakers (men, women, senior men and senior women (over 55)

OC4s or 8s perhaps mixed

First Nations canoes....

There will be speakers and a community feast on the beach after the race.

There is much work to be done in order to make this a successful event and so I am canvassing our meetup group to see who is interested in lending a hand  with organizing and promoting the Discovery Challenge.

BTW there will be a shorter course for those less athletic folk who want to come out and show their support but might find the 13.5 km course a little too long.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Ron

What a super outing!! I agree with the previous comments!...great food and food choices (via a buffet), great folks, great camaraderie, and great conversation! (too many "greats", eh?). I didn't go back with the others and camped on Discovery Island overnight and came back on Sunday. I'll be putting together a travelogue of photos and video on this MeetUp site as well as Facebook in the next 2-3 days.

This was truly a beautiful paddle with beautiful people. Hope we can do it again soon.

It was a beautiful sunny, calm day that provided an opportunity for both beginner, intermediate and advanced paddlers to get out and experience the magic of a paddle out to Discovery Island. This meetup isn't about virtual paddling. If you have just joined or have been a member quietly reading the website and thinking about coming out for a paddle you are more than invited to challenge yourself and come out to the next Discovery Island paddle and potluck.

If anyone is interested, I am likely to camp on Discovery after we get there and return late the next morning. Any else interested in doing this?

Weather looks good for tomorrow. Sunshine and light to moderate winds.....more than likely it will be one of those ideal days to paddle out to and around Discovery.

We are going to have a potluck lunch on Discovery. Bring your own bowl and some food to share with others. Let's have a delicious feast.

I want to update everyone as to Sunday's paddle. It is just going to be an in-house event, meaning SKUNCS and guests can attend. I haven't been well since my return from Guatemala and so I have not been able to put the energy I had hoped into creating a much larger event involving the entire paddling community. In any case it will great to see as many paddlers as possible out on Sunday and perhaps we can brainstorm together on a way to create a larger event later in the year. Goodness knows with the results last night we'll be working to oppose these pipelines for a long time to come.

I'll be paddling with Brad and Daniel, happy to show up and support and not particularly interested in racing. :-)

I will join the protest paddle that day but, like Daniel, will not be racing. Perhaps, there should be a category of paddling group that just wants to do a recreational paddle then. Feedback?

Oh sorry. I see VCKC already has a race for the OC1's and OC6's that same day in Victoria on the Gorgesponsored by the Canadian Outrigger Race Association. Too bad. I expect the local clubs will be attending that.

Around these parts we usually paddle OC1's or OC6's. Have you notified the various clubs in town so they can add the event to their calendars and encourage their teams to participate?
