Writing For A Living

Making a living writing is possible… if you put in the work, develop those contacts and expand your skills beyond fiction. And if you have a bit of luck too. In a world where the written word is gaining over even the human voice (think how much we text vs. how much time we spend on the phone), there is an ever-increasing demand for skilled writers who can deliver interesting stories, convince and convert readers for sales purposes, and generally keep audiences coming back to a publication or website.

In this session, we’ll cover the types of writing that actually pay, how to find your first gig and how to expand your client base. If you want to begin freelancing on the side or are serious about a full-time writing career, this will be useful for you.

(Note for newcomers: We actually meet in the Atrium, next door, but access is through the coffee shop. If the coffee shop is closed then there is a security guard at the Atrium's Blanshard St entrance who will usually let you in.)

Another late night at work, so another missed meeting. Sorry. :( Things should calm down in a week and then I'll get my life back.

As I'm the 'host' next week I'll have to. As for the show & tell (part 2) I might just repeat a piece I've read before. Not sure. Long work days and working weekends for the past while (all heavy brainwork) have kind of left me a bit dazed.

It'll be my first show & tell. I'm as excited listen to my fellow writers as I am to share my work. :)

Oh and here's the link to the Kickstarter campaign for that awesome t-shirt company I mentioned: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/643461720/mind-altering-t-shirts

My apologies Anabelle for cancelling so late in the day. I hope the evening is a great success.
I'll look for the handout in the file section.

Haven't joined yet, thinking about it. I've been to one of their open meetings.

Sorry, folks. I was really looking forward to this one, but the day has got away from me, and at this rate, I might catch up with today (Monday) by, um, maybe Thursday... Yikes! Hope you have a great discussion. Anabelle, will you be posting the overview on the site here? Thanks!!

Sorry... I won't be able to make it, have to work late tonight.

All right, this is going to be a big one it seems. Here are some things you need to know before you come tonight:

I WILL NOT talk about how to make a living writing novels, poetry or short stories--basically any kind of creative writing. If that's what you're looking for, this session will not help you.

I can't really speak to writing for print magazines, although I will touch on it, but it's beyond my experience.

Most of what I will cover will be how to make good money writing mostly on the Internet, although some of it can apply to print publications.

    Looking forward to seeing everyone!

I'll be there a little later on, but I'll be there. :-)
