"The Internet is the public space of the modern world, and through it governments now have the opportunity to better understand the needs of their citizens and citizens may participate more fully in their government. Information becomes more valuable as it is shared, less valuable as it is hoarded. Open data promotes increased civil discourse, improved public welfare, and a more efficient use of public resources." (The Open Government Data Principles (http://resource.org/8_principles.html))

Enabling new services and applications based on government data is to follow the proposials of Tim Berners-Lee to publish government data as RDF. This means to follow the main principles of the Open Knowledge Foundation, which are:

(1) Free and open access to the material, (2) Freedom to redistribute the material, (3) Freedom to reuse the material, (4) No restriction of the above based on who someone is or if its use is commercial or non-commercial

Austrian semantic web community is just underway to start such a process (http://www.w3.org/DesignIssues/GovData.html) also in austria, following the good practice in UK, US, AUS and NZ. We want to be in that international leading group (http://ourdata.eu/)! We want to be next!
