I'd help too. I'm in the Columbia gorge if she was interested in going to a school out here. I'm a vegan also, not sure if that's ok with her. But keep me in mind.

Subject: [vegan-397] Host for an exchange student sought...

Hello! We received this message and wanted to let you all know about it in case you would be willing to host an exchange student for a few months this spring.

Hi. I work for one of the exchange programs, we bring students 15-18 here to the U.S. to live with a host family and go to an American high school for a semester or academic year.
Right now, I'm trying to help find a host family for a vegetarian student who wants to come to the U.S. for one semester, from Jan-June.  We're limited in that many schools will not take second semester exchange students, and it's harder when a student has some kind of "limitation" like being a vegetarian -- I put that in quotes on purpose because I don't want it sound negative -- but it does sometimes make a potential host family pass on a student.

I need a host family in Tualatin or Portland Public, both of which will accept second semester students and both still have openings.  We need a commitment from a host family by winter break, even if we do some of the paperwork after that, so we only have two weeks left.  Kids would arrive mid-January, start school end of January with the second semester, and stay until school ends mid-June.  Students come with their own spending money for personal items, school fees, and travel; host families provide room, board, and a family/parent environment.  The main cost to a host family is food.  Host families must go through an approval process, of course, and can be any kind of family -- one or two parents, with or without children in the home, teens or young children.

The student, Laura, is an amazing kid...well they all are, that's why I like them.  Laura is mature and ambitious, wants to become a diplomat, is learning Czech and Spanish in addition to English (and German, she is from Austria), likes dancing, aerobics, snowboarding.

Thank you for any thoughts!
