The Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea will hold a re-dedication ceremony of the snorkel trail at the Datura Avenue Portal at noon on Saturday, July 28 to mark the 20th anniversary of the Town’s decision to create the Shipwreck Snorkel Trail, which was constructed by the Marine Archaeological Council of Broward County with support from the South Florida Reef Research Team.
The trail, which promotes the county’s maritime heritage, has a steel anchor, five concrete cannons and a small ballast pile. The project took four years to complete and started after the Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Town Commission in July 1998 adopted a resolution authorizing the creation of the artificial reef.
A few of the original Vone Research scuba divers, including Stephen Attis, who worked on the original project plan to attend.
The ceremony will include a few fond words about Dr. Raymond McAllister, a veteran scuba diver, Florida Atlantic University oceanographer and Vone Research Vice-President who died in 2012. "Dr. Ray" was a tireless supporter of protecting Florida's coral reefs.

Join divers from all around the globe as they celebrate PADI Women’s Dive Day. The emphasis is to get as many women as possible, at every level, diving on the same day in order to build awareness and interest for the sport of scuba diving.
