What we're about

Enjoy activities and adventures all year round and make new friends with WAMSD (Walks Adventures More South Downs). From walks to weekends away, quizzes to escape rooms, theme parks to adventure sports - WAMSD has it all. Our popular sister group WAMM (Walks Adventures More Midlands) has been enjoying a successful and varied programme since January 2018.

WAMSD hosts walks most weekends and on mid-week evenings throughout the year. Our year-round social programme is based in and around the South Downs, with walks and adventures across the South and occasional trips further afield. Most Saturday walks are planned with public transport in mind.

Here are just some of the many activities we have planned...
* Walks
* Theme parks
* Escape rooms
* Murder mysteries
* Treasure hunts
* Canoe trips
* Go Ape
* Games and quizzes
* Camping
* Aqua parks

WAMSD is free to join and to attend many of our activities. Where there is a cost involved, this is clearly stated in the event listing and payment is required upfront when booking your place.

When planning on attending one of our events, please ensure you read the description fully, including any related policies. By attending any WAMSD event you are agreeing to our terms and conditions. All WAMSD activities are strictly 18+ only. If you have any questions, you can contact us through Meetup, Facebook or email.

Snowdon weekend (Rhyd Ddu & Ranger paths)

Cwellyn Arms

***Joint weekend away with WAMM and Notts 20s-30s Walking Group*** Let's head for the nation's most popular summit where you literally have to queue for the trig point! But no, we're not taking the train or following the crowds up Llanberis Path... Having ascended the Ranger Path last year, we'll come down that way this time and instead, our Saturday climb up Snowdon will follow the Rhyd Ddu Path, which is conveniently located just a stone's throw from our suggested Friday and Saturday night accommodation. Take a look at this useful guide to the available routes (with pictures): https://www.visitsnowdonia.info/snowdon-walking-routes. The Rhyd Ddu Path is one of the lesser used paths on Snowdon, so it should hopefully get us away from some of the crowds. It follows a narrow ridge at one point with an exposed steep drop on either side. However the path along the top of the ridge is fairly gentle and smooth (not the grade 1 style scramble of Crib Goch). The route should be suitable for dogs that are on a lead, confident with heights and used to tiring steep walks. NOTE: In the event of bad weather we reserve the right to change the route plan at short notice for everyone's safety. On the Sunday we'll be doing another hike of around 8 miles in North Wales to make the most of our weekend away, before returning home. Sunday's hike will be jointly led for WAMM and Notts 20s-30s Walking Group, who are doing a separate Snowdon hike the day before. Saturday's Snowdon climb will take all day so please ensure you arrive on Friday afternoon/evening (20th September) - either joining us at the Cwellyn Arms or staying somewhere nearby so that we can set off promptly on the Saturday morning, perhaps as early as 9am. Exact timetable will be communicated nearer the time. The plan is to base ourselves at Cwellyn Arms, Rhyd Ddu, at the foot of Snowdon, Gwynedd, LL54 6TL - http://www.snowdoninn.co.uk/accommodation/tariff/. Cwellyn Arms offers pitches for tents (15 min walk from the pub) and limited indoor accommodation on a first-come-first-served basis. If you'd like to camp, please bring your own tent or pair up with others. The campsite allows well-behaved groups so please let us know so we can give them an idea of numbers. If you want indoor accommodation then you need to arrange this with Cwellyn Arms yourselves. There is no charge for this weekend away - other than your accommodation costs. However we will be taking up optional donations towards the WAMSD group Meetup fees. Approximate weekend timetable: Friday 7pm - Arrive/pitch at campsite (bring a torch as sunset is 7.30pm) Friday 8pm - Group evening meal Satuday 7.30am - Breakfast Saturday 9am - Set off for Snowdon day hike Saturday 7pm - Group evening meal Sunday 8am - Pack up ready to leave Sunday 8.30am - Breakfast Sunday 9.30am - Depart Sunday 11am (or a bit later depending on location) - Group hike Sunday 4pm - Return home Suggested kit list: Rucksack for walks Water bottle/pouch Packed lunches Snacks Walking clothes Walking boots Sunglasses and suncream Mini first aid kit Waterproofs Clothes for group meals out Cash for group meals out Sleeping bag (if camping) Pillow (if camping) Air bed & pump or roll mat (if camping) Tent (if camping) Toiletries Battery pack (for charging mobile phone) Headtorch Disclaimer - All WAMM events are 18+.
