Derbyshire Walking and Camping Weekend

Yew Tree Farm Camping

Join WAMSD and WAMM (our Midlands group) on a fantastic walking and camping weekend away in East Derbyshire and surrounding area. We've got a variety of walks and socials planned to make the most of this weekend. On Saturday there will be a trip to a Robin Hood escape room (provisional - waiting venue confirmation), followed by a 7.5 mile WAMMble around the beautiful Ogston Reservoir. On Sunday we are visiting Matlock Bath for a walk across Giddy Edge and the high-level and riverside paths that wander high and low around the village. Starting at Matlock Bath railway station the walk continues around Matlock, Cromford, the River Derwent and the surrounding cliffs. In the evening we will be going to the Matlock Illuminations and fireworks in Matlock Bath. Full details of the walks and socials are available on their separate Meetup event pages. We will be camping at Yew Tree Farm Campsite in Alfreton. You are responsible for booking and paying for your own campsite reservation. Ogston Reservoir WAMMble - 7.5 miles (Derbyshire weekend away)

Quick guide: Length=3 Pace=3 Terrain=3 Hills=3 (walk grades guide available at http://www.meetup.com/WAMMidlands/pages/24770028/Walk_Grade_Descriptions) Join WAMSD to amble beside the Amber and hike to Highoredish for far-reaching views on this circumnavigation of Ogston Reservoir. This rambling circuit around Ogston Reservoir will lead you off the beaten track. It takes you through meadows laced with wild flowers and alongside woodland where the remains of an old derelict chapel lie hidden. Along the way be sure to scan the skies for the sight of an osprey as this rare bird has been known to visit Ogston during the summer on its return from its winter nesting grounds in West Africa. Moderately strenuous hike along country lanes and roads without pavements, woodland paths with trip hazards and across fields and stiles where livestock may be grazing. Fields planted with crops (or stubble/ploughed in late October). We will meet in the small free car park Ogston Reservoir North (note this is not the main Ogston Reservoir West car park - look at the map pin). We will meet at 1.30pm. I do not believe there are toilets on the WAMMble or at the start. We will have a late packed lunch somewhere on the way, so bring a packed lunch. Make sure you are dressed appropriately for the weather conditions on the day. Please see www.meetup.com/WAMMidlands/pages/[masked]/Walks'_suggested_clothing_and_kit_list for details of a suggested clothing and kit list. Disclaimer - All WAMSD events are 18+. You are responsible for ensuring you are correctly dressed for walking, that you are bringing any water and refreshments you require and that you feel fit and healthy enough to take part. Our walks are led by experienced walkers, but we cannot foresee and prevent all hazards. Routes are planned by experienced volunteers and many are prewalked in advance, but poor weather and path conditions, livestock movements and path diversions may ocur without warning. Giddy Edge WAMMble from Matlock Bath - 9.5 miles (Derbyshire weekend away)

Quick guide: Length=3 Pace=3 Terrain=4 Hills=4 (walk grades guide available at http://www.meetup.com/WAMMidlands/pages/24770028/Walk_Grade_Descriptions) Join WAMSD in braving it over Giddy Edge (detour available for those with no head for heights!) on a 9.5 mile WAMMble. This walk uses many of the high-level and riverside paths that wander high and low around the village. Starting at Matlock Bath railway station the walk continues around Matlock, Cromford, the River Derwent and the surrounding cliffs. Early visitors likened Matlock Bath to an alpine resort, and that cannot be far from the truth. Romantic poet Lord Byron described Matlock Bath as; ‘There are places in Derbyshire rivalling Switzerland and Greece’. A bit far fetched, but with the vertical limestone crag of High Tor and its continuing ridge opposite the main part of the village, the aspect is not far removed from some alpine village – admittedly not quite as high, but nevertheless the looks are there. The ambience is continued with the cable car up to the Heights of Abraham and its terraced woodland walks. There’s even a tiny chapel, St John’s, about half way between Matlock and Matlock Bath that could easily be mistaken for a miniature Alpine Schloss. Probably the closest to a truly alpine footpath is the path along what is known as ‘Giddy Edge’. This path, complete with a metal handrail crosses the upper face of High Tor and can truly be compared – again, in a small way, to Via Ferrate the iron ladders that criss-cross the Dolomites and other limestone mountains of the Alps. Well behaved dogs are welcome. However you may wish to skip out the Giddy Edge section of the walk if you do not feel your dog will be safe on the cliff edge. There should be toilets open in Matlock, Matlock Bath and Cromford. There are also cafes and pubs at Matlock (2 miles), Matlock Bath (4 miles) and Cromford (5 miles) and we will stop at or near one for our lunch break. Bring sandwiches if you do not want to eat in the cafe/pub. Some of us will be attending the Illuminations afterwards (see separate event and remember to prebook your ticket if you wish to join us). If the walk finishes early we will find a cafe/pub in Matlock Bath until we need to meet up for the Illuminations. We will meet in front of Matlock Bath (not Matlock!) train station at 10am. This walk occurs on the final day of Matlock Illuminations. Parking will be at a premium in town. Make sure you arrive in plenty of time. The station car park can fit in over 300 cars, so we should be OK, but it will be very busy. Parking is £6 a day. Matlock Illuminations and Fireworks (Derbyshire weekend away)

Matlock Bath Illuminations is a fun-packed event featuring a spectacular parade of illuminated and decorated boats on the River Derwent on weekends in September and October, followed by fireworks (WAMM will be attending the last night). Matlock Bath Venetian Boat Builders' Association decorate themed models which are mounted on rowing boats and covered in lights and then paraded on the River Derwent down in Derwent Gardens. There will be a fantastic firework display, which will see the sky around Matlock Bath lit up in multi-colours, the firework display's will begin at 8.00pm with the best viewing positions being in Derwent Gardens. Matlock Bath Illuminations takes place in Derwent Gardens, Matlock Bath. We will meet at the train station at 5.30pm and walk down as a group as it will be very crowded to find people in the Derwent Gardens. If you choose not to attend the WAMMble first, be aware that it will be very hard to find a space to park anywhere in Matlock Bath (or even Matlock itself) from about midday (or even earlier) - you may need to park elsewhere and use public transport to get into town. Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome at the Illuminations, but owners should be aware that the fireworks are loud and can cause distress to some animals. You must purchase a ticket from https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/whats-on/derbyshire/derwent-gardens/matlock-bath-illuminations-2019/2019-10-27/18:00/t-dxdjmv. Disclaimer - All WAMM events are 18+.
