Appalachian Trail, Brown Gap to Max Patch and Back
Max Patch is a bald mountain with breathtaking 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains. This 4,600-foot mountain was cleared and used as pasture in the 1800s. Today, it's a 350-acre tract of open land on a high knob with 360-degree views. On a clear day, you can see from Mt. Mitchell on the east to the Great Smoky Mountains on the south. Max Patch is part of the Pisgah National Forest. Trail Description: A steep uphill climb for the first mile, then leveling off into moderate ups and downs, with a final climb to the top of Max Patch. Please arrive at the meeting place early and be prepared to leave at times posted ,bring plenty of water, snacks and proper hiking footwear. Hiking poles are recommended, also contribute some gas money for the person who volunteered to drive you. This is a dog friendly hike, dogs must be leashed at all times with leash no longer than 6' I keep saying I am gonna bring a kite to fly and keep forgetting, maybe some one will bring one.
