March 2014: Scaling WordPress [Developers]

  • Mar 5, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • Mediative/RedFlagDeals

WordPress deployments are done mostly on a single LAMP stack, but what happens when you have been asked to help scale WordPress to handle an international press release?

In October 2013, Alan deployed the Global Slavery Index for the Walk Free Organization (the world’s largest anti-slavery movement with an international audience) which received international press coverage, including BBC, Reddit and Hackernews. This presentation will discuss the technologies and strategies utilized in this deployment.

Alan Lok (@alan_lok) is currently, the developer advocate at Yellow Pages Group, responsible for community outreach for YellowAPI. In his spare time, he cycles, dabbles in DevOps work and teaches piano. Alan is obsessed with gadgets and always tries to find the latest tech 'toy'. His most recent purchase was the Recon Jet.

Alan had already presented this topic on Jan 27th for #DevTO and response was more than welcoming!

The following are the documents from that presentation:

Presentation notes from January 27th can be downloaded here

Alan's blog post about Jan 27th presentation is available here

Alan’s Jan 27th presentation video is available here

$5 to RSVP:

We'll be testing out a new $5 RSVP this year. Our goal is to keep no-shows to a minimum/make RSVP numbers more accurate, cover costs, and also provide some treats now and then.

Meetup Will Be Recorded/Streamed:

Also, new this year is that we will be attempting to record/stream all of our regular WordPress meetups, so even if you can't make the event, you won't miss out. Production quality will probably be a bit rough at first, but we'll keep at it and improve along the way!

Recording will be posted after the event.

Though the video recorded fine, the audio was atrocious. Lots of noise/interference (this is what happens when you use a webcam). I'm trying to clean it up in Premiere, but it's still pretty darn bad. :(

I'm looking at external mics for future presentations.

@Andy, try putting a compressor on it (audio) in Premiere (if you have it ) that should help with the noise.

I'll give that a shot. Thanks Dejan.

Great talk Alan. Learned a lot.

We're having issues with the WiFi this evening, so I'll be recording the presentation instead of streaming.

Sorry I can't make it out to this in person. Will look out for the recording!

Thanks, but I'm not a developer. I hope to see you all at the next meeting.
