Hild by Nicola Griffith

A brilliant, lush, sweeping historical novel about the rise of the most powerful woman of the Middle Ages: Hild

Hild is born into a world in transition. In seventh-century Britain, small kingdoms are merging, usually violently. A new religion is coming ashore; the old gods’ priests are worrying. Edwin of Northumbria plots to become overking of the Angles, ruthlessly using every tool at his disposal: blood, bribery, belief.

Hild is the king’s youngest niece. She has the powerful curiosity of a bright child, a will of adamant, and a way of seeing the world—of studying nature, of matching cause with effect, of observing human nature and predicting what will happen next—that can seem uncanny, even supernatural, to those around her. She establishes herself as the king’s seer. And she is indispensable—until she should ever lead the king astray. The stakes are life and death: for Hild, her family, her loved ones, and the increasing numbers who seek the protection of the strange girl who can read the world and see the future.

I hope everyone had fun last night. Something came up at the last minute and I wasn't able to make it. I'm really hoping to be able to make it in October.

It was I good to see you guys. Unfortunately, the group, was teeny tiny just the three of us. It is quality not the quantity that matters. Hope to everyone who missed the meeting and those who came, the next time I will be there (October)

I am wondering how many of us read, or finished, Hild. I did not. I thought if most of us didn't finish, maybe we could do something fun. There is this cool book called "Letters of Note" and a corresponding web site: http://www.lettersofnote.com. It contains letters the author has found to be interesting--funny, historic, sad, eloquent, or unique in some way. I know you don't have the book, but maybe we could all browse the web page and pick a letter than speaks to us in some way to share with the group. What do you think?

Hi Everyone, I just finished the book, and loved it, but am concerned about the discussion of "Hild" (or lack there of :-) that we might have that night. I mirror Laurel's question....

I just posted discussion questions for HILD. Some folks read the book all the way to the end (kudos to all of you!!) and we should have an opportunity to discuss it I think. I just felt that quite a few of us could not chew through all the characters and dense language and gave up (that's me) and so would not be contributing on many of the questions. This may make for a short discussion, IDK. I was only making a suggestion that might be fun. We can just leave early if y'all want to as well. I am OK with whatever you want to do. I am certain I can answer question 18.

Where is my copy of Hild? The library is sending me daily emails because it is overdue. Just let me know when you are done with it (whoever has it) and I can grab it from you.

Hey BC Members, if anyone has a library "hold" on Hild but has already procured it, please remove the hold. I have the book but am unable to renew it. Please advise if applicable.

You guys are going to hate me... My schedule for a trip up north changed and I won't make the meeting. I promise I will read the book as soon as it gets here.
