Hike, Lights, Action! (Easy)

  • Jan 6, 2013 · 3:00 PM

We’ll try to squeeze a little more from the holiday season with this easy, afternoon, 3-mile hike in Wheaton Regional Park (www.montgomeryparks.org/facilities/regional_parks/wheaton/index.shtm), followed by the “Garden of Lights” holiday display at Brookside Gardens in the evening (www.montgomeryparks.org/brookside/garden_lights.shtm). Wait, there’s more! There’s a special winter-plant exhibit and a fabulous model-train display in the conservatories (www.montgomeryparks.org/brookside/winter_display.shtm) and musical entertainment and refreshments (including baked goods, hot chocolate, and hot cider, all cash only) in the Visitor Center Auditorium.

The hike (0.8 blister!) will be leisurely paced on forest trails, over gentle hills and some dales. I’m sure that the upcoming (Jan 15) Oscar nominations will be on everyone’s mind, so bring a list of new movies you’ve seen in the last year.

We’ll meet for the hike in the parking lot of the Brookside Nature Center (1400 Glenallen Ave, Wheaton, MD; http://tinyurl.com/ctb4ged) at 3 pm. For a 2:30 pm pick-up from the Glenmont Metro station Kiss & Ride, contact me ([masked]) in advance. After the hike, we’ll pack ourselves into as few cars as possible and drive 300 yards to Brookside Gardens for the evening (5:30 – 7 pm). The entrance fee is $25 per vehicle in cash; pedestrians are not allowed.

Bring a bottle of water and snacks, and dress warmly. There may be mud or ice on the trails, depending. Bring rain gear if needed, and extra warm clothing for the evening; it can stay in the car during the hike. Bring $ to share the entrance fee, and to buy refreshments or purchase from the gift shops, if you like.
