Meet at the Gazebo in the main public parking lot at Solomon's Island @ 10:30-10:45am. (Can't miss it - once you get into town you will see it on your right-hand side. First, you'll come to a small parking lot in front of Solomon's Boat Rental. Then you'll see a little playground, Coney Island ice cream stand & American flag flying on the flagpole, after that is the big main lot where the gazebo is located. See picture of gazebo below.)

If you want to meet later, just meet at the lunch spot at 11:45am - The Lighthouse Restaurant.

Also, check your GPS/Google Maps... its easy to get there... and note that it is BEFORE THE BIG BRIDGE (Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge). I had said you'd cross it, but that's coming from the other direction. Turn-off for Solomon's Island is just BEFORE the bridge coming from DC area.

After meeting up at the Gazebo, we can just walk around a bit... won't take more than an hour to stroll & meander around the small "downtown" area to check it out.

Then, we can get lunch. I made reservations at The Lighthouse Restaurant at 11:45am. That provides enough time - for those who are interested - to make the 2pm boat tour (recommended & I will be doing). I'M ASSUMING EVERYONE IS GOING. IF YOU ARE NOT DOING LUNCH, LET ME KNOW - EMAIL ME OR POST A COMMENT ON THIS PAGE.

The boat tour gets done at 3pm, so you have the rest of the afternoon to do what you'd like. Perhaps spend an hour or so touring the Calvert Marine Museum because you are already there (boat tour departs from there). Then head over to the Tiki Bar for a drink (recommend doing so at some point). Or if a cafe setting is more your thing then head over to Lotus Kitchen for snacks, treats and the famous Kim's key lime pie. Or just hang out on the boardwalk and enjoy the views...perhaps with an ice cream cone from Coney's.

If you want to stay longer - dinner at Solomon's Pier or The Striped Rock are good options. Or simply watch the sunset from the boardwalk.

IF YOU WANT TO GO ON THE BOAT TOUR & YOU WANT ME TO GET YOUR TICKET (remember tixs are first-come, first-serve - buy tickets that day), LET ME KNOW - EMAIL ME OR POST A COMMENT ON THE PAGE.

That's the update!

Join us on Saturday, June 7th for a day trip to Solomons Island!

Solomons is a cool, waterfront town located in in Southern Maryland (Calvert County) where the Patuxent River meets the Chesapeake Bay. It’s about 60 miles from the Washington DC area or about an hour and 15 minutes to an hour and a half depending on where you are starting.

Once there, we’ll park in the free public lot and then go exploring on foot. This quaint island being only about a mile in length means it’s easy to get around. We’ll check out the sights and take in the natural scenery of this picturesque waterfront fishing village. The day will include a stroll along the Riverwalk, the wooden planked boardwalk that meanders along the Patuxent River and spans the length of the main drag of the island. The Riverwalk provides a nice, relaxing waterfront setting good for leisurely strolls and people-watching. We’ll enjoy great waterfront views and be able to check out the town’s restaurants and shops. In fact, a lunch stop at a waterfront restaurant is a must. :) Local Maryland seafood is of course this island town’s specialty, but there will be other yummy options as well.

Other potential things to do include a stop into the Chesapeake Bay Biological Lab located a little beyond the southern end of the boardwalk. Here we can learn about what is being done to protect the remaining marine life in the area that is threatened by the ever growing human population moving into the area and over-harvesting. You can also learn what you can do to help "save the bay".

We can also opt to visit the Calvert Marine Museum, which is a lot cooler than it may sound. It’s actually a very popular day trip destination located within a half-mile of the island. Learn about the life and history of the region including the unique story of the Patuxent River and Chesapeake Bay – its past, natural environment, and maritime heritage. Get a first-hand glimpse of the variety of life in the area while strolling along the Marsh Walk. The museum also includes the Drum Point Lighthouse - a fully restored cottage-style, “screwpile” lighthouse. It is only one of three remaining from forty-five that once served the Chesapeake Bay in the early 1900's. (The museum also provides tours of Cove Point lighthouse, which is just a few miles away.)

From the Calvert Marine Museum, if we'd like, we can enjoy a leisurely, relaxing one-hour motorized sightseeing river cruise on the Wm. B. Tennison – the oldest Coast Guard licensed passenger-carrying vessel on the Chesapeake Bay. On the river cruise, we would sail around the Solomons inner harbor, see Solomons Island and the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, pass underneath the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge and turn back at Pt. Patience and the Naval Recreation Center. (Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis and $7.00 tickets must be purchased the day of the cruise at the museum. Maximum capacity is 40 persons. Cruises leave the museum dock at 2:00pm.)

Another popular attraction is Annmarie Garden Sculpture Park located just a few miles north of Solomons, MD. The garden is a combination of public sculpture and botanical gardens. The sculpture garden features a 1/4 mile walking path that meanders through the woods past permanent and loaned sculpture, including over thirty works on loan from the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art.

Toward the end of the day, options include the infamous Tiki Bar (an open air bar that is the place to be), dinner and sunset watching.

For anyone who wants to spend the night, there are great bed and breakfast options.

If you are looking for an easy, recharging getaway to escape the hustle and bustle of metro/city living, join us on our fun, relaxing day trip to Solomons Island!

We can decide on the exact time and place to meet on the morning of Sat, June 7th as well as carpooling options later as the date gets closer.

[Don't forget if you are looking for another cool, but longer trip - think Iceland! Booking deadline coming soon on June 30.]
